A statement recently prepared by
county clerk Waters relative to wild
animal bounties paid by the county
during the ten year period ending
December 31, 1fl20, shows this item
'o have cost the county the sum of
$23,562 during, that time.
A study of the report seems to in
dicate that a big bounty is cheaper
in the long run than a small one,
the greater amount being more of an
incentive for (rappers to devote
their time to the work. In the years
of 10J1-12-13-14, when the bounty
was $.1.50, the total amounts paid
were $10 55, $2227, $2441, and
$2639.50 respectively, while in 1315
with the bounty raised to $3, the
amount paid jumped to $5965.50,
and the following year, when the
bounty was reduced to $1.50 the
total dropped to $1278, and in 1917
it took another drop to $1164. Then
in 1918 and 1919 when the bounty
was again raised to $3.00 for males
and $4.00 for females, the totals
went up again to ....2763 and $2709
respectively.
It would bo hard to make a guess
how many sheep would be left in
the county by this time if no bount
ies had ever been paid for predatory
animals.
