    National and Local
Meat Business
The meat business of the
country is conducted by various
agencies
By small slaughter-houses
in villages
By local Abattoirs or small
Packing Houses in towns
both
Using only a part of the
local live stock supply
one
Furnishing only a part of
the local demand for meat.
These slaughtering and distributing
agencies fill a well defined but neces
sarily restricted place in the distribu
tion of the products of live stock.
But only packer like Swift &
Company, organized on a national
scale, are able to undertake the ser
vice that is more vitally important,
involving
An Obligation to the Producer
To purchase for spot cash all the
live stock the producer may send
to market for slaughter.
An Obligation to the Consumer
To make available to every con
sumer, everywhere, in season and
out, the full supply and variety of
meat products, of the highest
standard that the market affords.

Industrial Club Leader Hers
A. I. O'Reilly, of Corvallis. is
in Morrow county this week vis
ioing the boys and girls who are
engaged in the industrial club
work. Accompanied by the coun
ty agent he is making a home to
home visit, inspecting the work
of the various club members, en
couraging them and completing
the work started when he was in
the county a few weeks ago.
Morrow county has one of the
strongest clubs of any county in
Eastern Oregon, the list of those
enrolled and reporting is a splen
did indication that the boys and
girls of this county realize their
responsibility and the value in
increasing food production. The
boys' and girls' club work is be
ine emphasized throughout the
state more this year than ever
before, and the parents who can
see what their children are doing
in way of increasing food pro
duction cannot help feeling proud
ot the way in which they are
helping, and are lending them
encouragement in every way
possible.
V. M. Castle, itistributor of
water on the government irriga
tion project at Irrigon was here
during the week. While in th
city Mr. Castle ordered the Her
aid sent to bis address, as the
best means of keeping posted on
the news of Morrow county.

Harvest Help Will be Needed
Business and professional men
of Heppner.'as well as of other
Morrow county towns will have
a chance of showing their patri
otism in a practical manner next
harvest according toCounty Ag
ncultural Agent Brown who says
the indications are tbat help will
be very scarce and that every
able bodied man will probably
be needed to help take care of the
big wheat crop now promised.
It is not expected that' these
men will close their stores, shops
and offices permanently during
the harvest season but it is ex
pected that all will be able to de
vote a portion of their time to
helping the neighboring farmers
save the wheat crop. Girls and
women, it is expected, will be
used as far as possible to handle
the necessary business in the
towns thus releasing everv man
possible for the harvest work.
Many business and profes
sional men in this county have
had farm experience and will
therefore prove valuable assist
ants to the farmers in time of
harvest stress. It is understood
the proposal is meeting with uni
versa! favor in the business and
professional circles of the vari
ous towns.

Will Attend Labor Meeting
A meeting to discuss and ad
just wages for the harvest
season will be held in Pendleton
June 10 which will be attended
by several Morrow county far
mers. Among those who have
already signified their intention
of going to Pendleton at that
time are the county agent F. R.
brown, W. E. Cummins, Jeff
Jones, Wm. Pad berg. C. R.
Pointer and J D. Bauman. The
idea of the meeting is to work
iut a fair and equitable wage
scale for the harvest season aed
it is expected to be a substantial
increase over that paid in this
county last season.
A meeting of thresher anu
combine operators in this county
is also being arrangebdy Mr.
Brown which will probably meet
in Heppner about June 15 th the
object of which being to make
arrangements by which competi
lion among thresheshermen will
be largely superseded by coope
ration.
