SCHOOL NOTES
By Supt. S. E. Notson.
The Irrigon school is making ex
cellent progress under the direction of
Prof. A. W. McCann and Miss
Margaret Vince. Anew heating and
ventilating plant has been installed
in the primary room, and if it proves
satisfactory, another will be purchased
soon for the other room. A fountain
attachment to the large water jar in
sures sanitary conditions as to the
water supply. Paper towels are pro
vided for the pupils. An excellent
equipment for manual training has
been provided, and the pupils are
enthusiastic over the work. The pu
pils in the primary room are doing
some good work in sewing and basket
work.
At Castle Rock, Prof. J. A. Gibbons
is again at the helm. This school
also has a patent heating and ventila
ting plant. The floor has been oiled,
and a supply of sweeping compound
is provided. Paper towels are fur
nished for the pupils. Anumber of
improvement are contemplated. The
pupils are making good use of one fea
ture of play apparatus a croquet
set. They are planning the construc
tion of some other play apparatus.
In District No. H9, Miss Lillian
Troedson is the teacher. A new water
fountain has been stalled recently.
The floor has been oiled. This school
also has a new set of maps and a fine
new globe.
In District No. 8, two teachers are
now employed. Miss Esther Cox be
gan the school, but the desire of some
of the older pupils to take up the
ninth grade work made it necessary
to employ another teacher. Miss
Erma Davenport was secured for the
advance work. The new building and
the premises are being put into the
very best condition.
Miss Anne C, Troedson teaches in
District No. 16. The work of the term
, is starting off nicely. The school was
... ; i
xaLuci lute in upei.mg, owing to wie
fact that Miss Troedson was in Eu
rope when the war broke out and was
not able to return as soon as she ex
pected. Her pupils are enjoying some
first hand information in regard to
conditions on the other side of the
Atlantic.
Mr. Smead, having reasons best known to appear and answer the complaint
by the Company and Mr. Smead. In
answer to a letter written to Mr.
Smead, by the 0. W.-R. & N., on
August 24, and published in the
Gazette-Times, as chairman of the
committee I replied that this matter
would be carried before the Railroad
Commission and hoped and believed
that they would be compelled to com
ply with our requests.
This committe has gone forward
in this matter as instructed by the
Commercial Club, and we believe that
we can show the Railroad Commission
that the O.-W. R. & N. Co. can put
on a motor train in addition to the
train now being run and yet have
net earnings on the Heppner Branch
to equal or exceed any similar road
in Oregon.
The revenue from passenger traffic
alone which is 55 V4 cents per train
mile practically pays for the opera
tion of the train in being run and in
addition to this has express, mail and

the complaint as above required the
said plaintiff will apply to the Court

by publication thereof once a week for
six consecutive weeks in the Heppner

general circulation in Morrow County,
Oregon, published at Heppner, by
virtue of an order made and entered
