Every time an election draws near a horde of candidates spring up for the various offices within the frift of the people. Some of these are mentally and morally competent, while others are tota lly unfit Under our accepted theory of self government we are presumed to select men with especial regard to their qualifi cations, their integrity, and their all round fitness for the particu lar office in view. That though is only theory. In practice we seldom do anything of the kind. In theory the people are sup posed to male their own select ions, without piss or coercion. But they don't. In practice the bosses, "politely 'termed leaders, assemble in secret and make their - own selections and then proceed to ram them down the throats pf the people who do the voting. In making those select ions behind closed doors the boss es (beg pardon, the. "leaders") give but little, heed to the mere matter of fitness or qualification, i The one predominating thought in their minds is, "will he b arr.enibie to oar advice and sug gestions?" The next and only remaining problem hi that of delivering the votes. In U of these proceedings the people are not consulted,- although they perforce must foot the bills, Jhe only - privilege accorded these "sovereign; people" is to vote and vote as .they are told (beg pardon again, as thev are "ad vised"). The man who jav good to the bosses (shucks, we mean leaders") can keep right on holding public office as long as he continues to be good to hie masters, unless in the meantime the people become to-rdtsgusted ! they literally kick himoutr And why is it so? Very simple, Mr, Voter, very simple indeed. Hav held their secret conclave and selected their puppet,,, (be? a hundred pardons, " we mean 'man' ) the bosses sally forth with artjreLi J We are . frank . to admit that eccasionally a good man slips into office even under this system In fact, we have such' men in office right . in due midst, and we may have such again. But we insist thatfhe people should be free to make their own select ions without persuasion' or inter ference from the bosses, for it is our opinion that but few men can be loyal to the people as s people and yet be satisfactory to the bosses. Some of these' days the people will awake to a realization of their political power and the bosses will cease to exist- They will be just voters, as the rest of as have been for these many years. Speed the day and, push it along! Political Announcement I hereby announce my candidacy for District' attorney of Morrow County, Oregon, subject to the will jot the republican voter at the May primaries. ' -. " ". pd.adv. Glen T. They endow him with all of the graces pf the human race, 1 bestow upon him the wisdom of Sotoman, and advertise him far and wise as "the hope of the people. And because we (the people) are not bosses (ahem! leaders); - because we talk little and think less; because we follow the. "advice" of the bosses Instead of investigating men and conditions ourselves be cause of all these things we elect the toolsof the bosses today and curse our system of government tomorrow. Bosses are not con fined to national and state politics, They flourish in every district, hi every county, in every township, and in every city and village. Bosses are everywhere, scheme ing. wire pulling, enticing, dictat ing, forcing their will upon a people whose will alone should be supreme. Bosses do not like to be called bosses. . They prefer to posess leys) party leaders, whose "duty" it is to guide 'the people' in the way they should go. - And the-way of the bosses is so subtle that the people do not realize that they are being led around by the nose, that they are being herded like sheep, that they are obeying the will of the bosses st every election. It is a difficult matter for any man -to secure even the humblest of public of fices without first securing the approval of the bosses, and that approval readers him unfit to loyally serve the people ss a whole. We would like to see s different system in vogue, and wg would like to sss it make the start right in this local commun ity. Ws would Hketo see the names of every man who seeks office posted where the people can sea h Then ws would like to see evtry voter make his own decision without a single suggest ion or s word of advice from any other person. Then ws might hops to find bmq flWng public offices because of efficiency, whereas now K is mainly a quwstiofi of bosses god votes. Writs Box 162. lone.
