The Hew Eogland Old and the Widow Are the Unes who Bemaia. In the offices in Washington the principal rival of the widow is tlie New England young wom.iu, says the New -York Commercial Advertiser. There are Ma&achusctU girls who taught school twenty and thirty years ugo . who got into the department nnd ore there yet. in the tirsl place, the New England girl has been educated to the idea of malting her own living and to regard marriage as very Improbable. title is, first of all, a scliolnr, and a scholar of natural capacity and breadth of character. She can do anything any man can do except, possibly, climb a tree. But she can climb a civil service examination, which is inGuiWly of more importence to the government and to herself, She may be a widow, bnt she gct there, and the slays to a ripe old age. In fact, there is no rec ord of liny widow or New England girl dying or getting murricd from a gov ernment office. Any one of them wonld scout the idea of leaving u Hilary of eJ,kx) or l.fcorl,r00 or tl,S) a year to do hou.scivork lor sumo man who cim'l earn as mttch fcinsclf. bo tlie isew England girl aud the widow atlelt to a salary and leave roiauu 'o cul low fools. . Ah the civil fiervict record shows that about one woman out of every sixth clerk is called for by bureau oflicinia, nothing but superior adaptability and atoying powers will account for the steady increosso ul ivimien In all the de partments. Perhaps the permanent removal of the huli'inlinate place nnilcr tlie guvcmticiil iiom the polit ical inlluctiscs which once controlled them has done more (or overy class of employes who can rely upon their owa ruerita than anything else has done. Thfc enetl, ItWemrea Orfma Kxlsts AJso la Vovlebralee of the Lawn Order-W her. It Is Loeaoa, Rresnt researches prove that man and all vertebrates seem to possess the rudiments of a third eye. This discov ery is not only very interesting, but ulso remarkably instnictlve, sinee tin rudimentary third eye of a man has, by one of the most noted philosophers of modern days, been looked upon as be ing the seat of the soul. As organs by proper use develop in strength and perfection, so they be come weak by lack of use. If for many generations an organ should remain without use, Its structure in time be aomes simpler nnd more imperfect. If such a process continues throughout ufres, an orpau, by constant disuse, will become reduced to a more rudiment of what It was in the species using the same. Thus, speciee of birds that only walk and run, but never ily, have only mdimeutary wings, as the ostrich; while In tlie eagle and the albatroa; tlie wings are seen In a state of perfection. Now, In cloeely examining the skulls of certain lizards, it was found that near the top of head, under the dark, Ojiaque Bkln, and often in the very bone, an almost ertrct eye exists, although no ray of light ever could reach It, This eve shows a ervstaline lens, a retina ol very complex structure and an optic nwve; In fact, all the essential parts of a perfect eye. But being covered by the ppnntie skin of the nuimal it is ab solutely useless. If this optic nerve K traced to the brain M is found tocou- nct the eye with the so-called piuenl g and nf the brain. This pineal glunil Is, or cnursc, in no sense of a word a rial pland, but a definite portion of the n 'nous tissue of the bruin. Invariably located just back nnd partly over tne cerebrum, and in front of the rounded b-uin-muss which generally is eousid ered to correspond to the corpora njndrigemlna m a num. This third eye of the spotted lizard is called the pineal eye, on account of the nerve connection of the retina witlr the pineal glnnd. Now, while in cor- tnin lizards this highly develtqied eye is useless because it is covered by npnquc skin, and in hers even deep ly lierided in bone, it would seem proba ble that in an earlier stiufe of develop ment this pineal eye was not rudi mentnry, but In constant use. A very alight modification would acconipliBl: this namely, the transparency of the skin covering the eye. This is esnct ly the condition of the normal eyeti in reptiles to-day; the skin covins -them. hut it Is transiierent where it giasaea over the eye. In the skulls nf some of the gigantic reptiles of the earlier age af this globe, palcpntologista.lutve long ago found a kufie round perforation Probably hia was the socket of the third or pineal eye or the ichthyosau rus, the plesiosnurus and the labyrin thodon. But a much more important conclu sion must he drawn from tliia discov ery uaniely, that in all vertebrates, even including man, the truces of this third eye reninin to-day. The pineal eye of lizards being connected with the large pineal gland of the same, it would seem that the pineal gland Itself is but the nerve center of optic thulmus for this third eye. In all reptilcaund amphibia the pinenl gland is large; no it ts nlan in fishes.' In higher nniumls the cerebrum develops very m uch, over growiug the more posterior portionaof the bruin. By this preponderance of the nerve mass the pineal gland lie comes covered by the cerebrum and an sumefl more and more rudimentary forms. But It remains with obstinate pertinacity. It la even always present is man though here only of the size of a peaandrudelyreaemblingapinccone in shape. It seems also degenerated in structure, having hardly any nervous tlnsue. These facts of form and struct ure have given rise to its name, that of pineal gland. Popular Science Monthly.
