The Albany Democrat says: That it has heou reliably Informed that before Governor Pennoyer'a time, as governor had expired, that he com muted Morgan Wnssom's sentence from life to four years and G. F. Ruasle's time to eighteen months. Last Monday, G. W. Rice, local agent in this city for the Royal insur- rance company, received a check on the Albany bank for $600 from his company, In full payment of the amount insured of the residence of Mr. F. Swing. This is a very prompt pay ment, as it bad only been five dave since the building bad burned. Ex-Secretary of State Fowler Chart- wick, died suddenly at his home In Ba- iem, last Tuesday evening of heart failure. He had of late been troubled somewhat from this cause but was not set iously affected. He was at the onp- itol building during the day apparently iu good health, and death was an un expected shock to his family and friends. , Mr. A. B. Mcllwain, a pioneer mer chant of Albany, died suddenly at his dinner table yesterday. He bad been reading the account of the sudden death nf ex-Governor Chadwick In Sa lem, and remarked that he was afflic ted with tlie same kind of heart trouble, when he suddenly gasped, grew unconscious, and life had expired. Last Saturday about midnight, Leb anon was visited by the hardest wind storm that it has experienced this winter. It shook a great many resi dences, bloHcd down a few signs along Main street, broke a glass front nf one of our stores and (el a number of trees. We have heard a number of people got up and prepared themselves for the worat, but no very great amount of damaged was done, and after a while they returned to their beds, sleeping; peacefully till morning. Prof. C.A. Lewis assisted by his daughter, Miss Ida, gave two of his performances in this city, last Friday and Saturday evenings which was well patronizd considering the times. All who attended were satisfied lliey got tlie worth of their money. He gives a good show, and as a juggler, Is uhead of any we 'have ever seen here. Miss Ida's pictures In the air are well worth the price of admission, at all limes, to see. The Prof, made many friend here, and there are some little ones that will always remember him. Courtney and his estimable family left last Tuesday afternoon for McCoy, their new home, where the doctor has decided to locale, and prac tice medicine. Dr. Courtney and his pleasing wife will bo greatly missed here, I., our pleasant little city. We see by the Corvallis Times I hat the windstorm that swept that vioin lt about midnight last Saturday was the most violent of several seasons. The big tweuty-fnur font Cyclone wheel of the windmill that surmounts the water works' tower, with half Its blades torn off, is a monument of the storm's severity. Those who live In that vicinity say that the wind whistl ing through the wheel at the time re sembled the horse whistle of a big ocean steamer, and was almost as loud. Many signs were blown down and nu merous houses were so shaken that In mates aiose and dressed themselves, prepared for the worst. Many electric light, telephone and telegraph poles were blown down, On Jefferson and Sixth streets the electric light and tel egrnph wires came In contact and the heavy current of the light wire burned J out the telegraph instruments in the 8. P. depot upstairs ifllcc. The tele phone was working yesterday but all telegraph lines leading into the town, were prostrated. The Linn Delegation. A Tea Party. Mrs. W. E. Chandler gave a pleaseut tea party last Wednesday evening, at her residence iu this city, iu honor of her lister-la-law, Mrs.W. F. Read of Albany who is vlsting her. The fol lowing ladles were present: Mudamn, Montarjue, Foley, Adams, Cheadle, Buhl, Feebler, Carman and Miss Fan nie Griggs. Memrs. Cufipan, Monta gue, Cbaiidle and Dr. Cheadle got around In time to get a share in the elegant supper but was not considered iu the parly, as It was a regular ladies' party.
