Lebanon Express. H. Y. KIKPATRICK, Editor - a ad - Proprietor. FOR SHERIFF. Many offices have to be filled at the June election. No office to be filled, comes closer to the people than the sheriff's office. No officer has to deal so intimately with the people. No officer has greater op portunity to oppress or to favor the unfortunate liti gants and the people at large than the sheriff. lie can help or can embarrass you, when in trou ble. Hie arm is the- arm of .the law, to be used in justice and kind ness or injustice or oppression ss the character of the man dictates. Jackson has filled this office two years. Whereisthemanwhocansay that Jackson ever used his author ity to oppress any man friend or foe? Has he not always indulgent when his duty would permit? Has he not always gone in rain or storm to execute hiB orders? Ha? he ever been derelict in his duty to the county or to any individual? He has traversed mountains of snow, has invaded the camps of Indians, has traveled without sleep for day? and nights, in pursuit of prisoners and has always caught his man. None have escaped. Is he honest? Look over his office records. Every book is accurately kept, every account is correctly balanced, no man has lost a cent The county has never suffered one penny. No better sheriff has ever, filled the sheriff's office. There were good men who wanted the office, but the democrats with one accord gave to Jackson. No clique no faction, no bosses worked for Jackson. The people wanted him and the people got him. Vote for the man of the people, an honest, poor boy, who without aid, Wade himself an honored, respected and capable man. All of this can be truthfully said of Lum Jackson. Hon. W. Mitchell delivered an address in Union Hall Wednesday evening in the interest of the re publican party. There was but little in his speech beside trying to explain the tariff and waving the bloody shirt. He was followed by Hon. S. A. Dawson who also tried to give ns something new on the tariff and to the populists a roost on flexible money. Then came onr young friend, A. J. John son, of Scio, who did better than the others because he did not say much on account of a cold. The populists have offered to pay Mr. Mitchell's expenses if he would came back and speak again, 3 they claim he did them more good than harm, and we believe it. The republicans have better timber in the county than Mr. Mitchell men who can make a good sensible address, and who can argue their cause with much ability than this imported gentleman. The voters of Linn county Bre too intelligent for this gentleman and have long sinco discarded many of his sense less ideas and are progressive, even if they are republicans. The Pollard-Breckinridge scan dal should now be left severely alone. The woman has gotten her verdict against the man. Both have been exposed and both have been equally disgraced. Neither can again hope to have the respect of decent people. The morbid sentimentality that induces some people to make a heroine of this woman, has worked great damage to the manhood and womanhood of America. It has kept before the gaze of the people, vice clothed in its most attractive garb a pub lic trial. It is time to dismiss these people and their mutual crime from the public gaze. Whatever doubt may have ex isted, and there has been very little, about Mr. Cleveland's purpose to help Senator Dolph's re-election, is now removed, and from hence forth it is to be a clean-cut fight between Dolph and Pennoyer on the the senatorship, with the gold men of both parties favoring the former and the silver men of htith parlies supporting the latter. The combinations are peculiar, th republicans and the administration democrats being in one combine, and the silver democrats, silver republicans and the populist in the other combine. Rev. Joe Waldbop, in his paper, the Leader, speaking of the plat form adopted by the Astoria con vention, says: "The state plat form is the most remarkable docu ment yet given to the people o; Oregon. It begins with the decl aration of on 'abiding faith ami confidence in the integrity, good faith and patriotism of Grover Cleveland,' and then follows up with the most ultra populistic populist platform . we have seen. To endorse Cleveland and populism in the same breath is a feat in po litical gymnastics that takes the cake." ' Owing to the dispute between the North American Commercial Company and the United St'tes Government as to the amount of rent to be paid for sealing privi leges in the Pribvloff Islands, the company has withdrawn its bid to supply coal for the United States revenue cutters in Behring Sea this summer. Nathan PrERCK, or "Gov. Pierce," as his friends call him, is in the city for a couple of days. He was asked when he would go on the campaign and said he would pro bably remain at home and attend strictly to hit ranching operations. Pendleton East Oregonian. The Dalles Chronicle wants the date for taxes to become delinquent extended from April 1st to Decem ber 1st. Its proposition is a good one. In the spring money is scarce and it the most inconvenient season of the ye ir for property owners to pay taxes. These bard times are not profit able for the humorists. Mark Twain's dankruptcy is the logical sequence of times when all are weeping and none are laughing, and there is nothing so grim as professional humor. Congress is afraid to take any action on the Breckinridge matter, though the constitution plainly states the power of that body. If Breckinridge was unseated too many others equally as bad might be exposed. A Massachusetts town finds it self in a novel situation. Its treas urer has resigned after serving twelve years, and has left in the treasury 1300,000 tht he cannot account for. We had a republican speech Wednesday evening and oh! what a partisan thing it was! he went so far as to Bay that all the intelli gence was in the East. He is a subject of pity. Mitchell Wednesday night said it made him sick to hear these little whipper snappers over the country talk fin-ance. Try a dose of populist casearia bark. Dr. Lamberson will administer the dose free. We felt sorry for Mr. Dawson last night at the speaking. He thought one of his bulls was running at large once more, when Mitchell was making his fool talk. Archie Johnson was quite hoarse last night singing the glorious golden time a commsng when he takes his seat in the state senate. Poor Archie; your way there is beset with many thorns. A young man wbo is compiling a history of Montana proposed to tbe Butte councllmen a few days ago to print a biographical sketch with s por trait of each man wbo would pa; $250. Tbe bodies of two negro men were found flouting in Mulberry creek nine mile from 8elm, Ala., ot April 4th. Tbe two bodies were tied together with a rope and tbeir ears were cut off. San Francisco, April 18, 18M. To rat Soma bfths Kxnuss: . I am feeling a little lonely since my friend, Charley Smith, left for Oregon, although I still have company witb Oregon Beauty. I took part In the grand parade through tbe oity yester day to the reception of Rex Felix, the king of carnivals. I assure you she was as muob of an attraction as any one rig. The king was received with regal honors upon his entrance to tbe. olty fwterday morning. Tbe royal barge iruusferred tbe King and court lrom tbe good ship Argus in mid-stream to the Clay street wharf where landing was made. There the royal army received the king and went rushing up Market street and out to the park, .he traveling bars of music were sought upon tbe towers and minarets of the City Pulnis, aud there like so many lyres saug out to tbe subjects of his royal majesty tbat he would never cease to love them. It was B:Xt o'clock when the tug Fearless steamed out from the wharf with a party of ladies and gentlemen who bad been Invited to participate in Welcoming his Majesty. As the fear less steamed toward the Golden Gate, she was saluted by the dipping of numerous flags aud the sound of hun dreds f whistles. Uncle George, as they always cull him, and the only name I have beard, delivered the address of welcome. He poke as follows: "Your Majesty, the pleasant duty has been assigned to me to bid you welcome. It Is tbe first time since the discovery of this country Dan O'Con uell tbat there has been a king among us. We have here the most beautiful land upon which tbe sun ever shone, the fairest wouieu ever placed ou earth to delight the hearts of meu, m land of sunshine, fruit aud flowers. For three days you will revel with all your court. The laws will all your merry company fullest lioense. May God guide you aud your followers now aud forever. Amen. As tbe vessel approached the crowd ed wbarvee, again tbe whistles sounded bells rung, flags dipped and cries of "Long Live tbe King!" arose from tbe multitude. At tbe end of the wharf wasacauuou which belched forth tbe royal salute as the imperial barge passed. Tbe baud once more struck up "If Ever I Cease to Love." At the landing the royal body guard was awaiting tbe king. It presented arms and cheered him roundly as be lauded aud the thousands of loyal subjects there assembled, joined in the huazas as tbey saw the merry monarch, Rex, accompanied by bis jester, mount a six-horse dog-cart. Tbe royal court took Beats in car riages, tbe advance was souuded and the march to tbe City of Palms was begun. Tbe column was as follows: Naval battalion, N. G. C. biogle Corps. Battery. Band. Lord High Marshal. Royal Heralds, mounted. His Majesty, Rex Felix, aud jester. Boyal Court in carriages. Company A, Royal Guards mounted Iuvited guests in carriages. Company B Royal Guard mounted. Royal Embassadors in carriages. Company A, Marmalukes. B, " C, " " D, " From here the line of nuirch to the park was crowded with tens of thous ands of spectators. Rex was first to be arrayed all over red except in the . notice is nereoy ((iycii mhu uk turner- crown, ewn tbe nose was red. In fuct, the whole mub wue dreswed in red, and looked like wiiil ineuof the woods. Tbe ceremonial uf presenting the' keys of tbe city was short and impres sive. On a yellow, cade-sealed throne, placed between. th: governor and mayor sat Kex Felix in all tbe magni ficence of his oriental splendor. Tbe uuse of his musk hud been painted a bright red to indicate the convivial spirit of his majesty. On a small i-llkun pillow lay tbe three golden keys to the city which were presented to tiie king by Alias Juliet Mitchell. The fair is still the drawing card. The city is very much stirred up over the induttriul army. 1 was at Ouk - land this evening when au army of MO ianded from tbe city. They joined ; au army al Oaklund which makes HM) strong. Marvelous Cure ! Harnky, Orkoon, April 30, '93. O. W. K. Mra. Co., Portland, Ore. Diar Strs: About a year ago I was laid up with rheumatism. I was in a terrible state. 1 could not turn over in bed without assistance. Ab there was no physician in Harney I tried various liniments, but they all failed. When j my condition was very carious, as the : pain seemed to be striking near the ! heart, your agent came along and had a bottle of Congo Oil. Hearing!, was ill with rheumatism, he called upon me, and bronght a bottle of Congo Oil. He eommenced nibbing me with it, and in less than live minutes I was relieved ; in half an hour I was able to swing my feet out of bed, and ono hour I was down stairs. He left the bottle with me and I applied it several times. From that day to this I have not been troubled with rheumatism. I feel that I owe my life to the wonderful oil. All this can be verified bv Fred Haines, of Harney, also the landlord of the hotel and several others. I always carry a bottle of Congo Oil in sir grip now. Yours very truly, ' C. II.
