Mrs John O. Boyd, wife of a well
known citizen of Fern Ridge, while
ill tending a revival meeting oonducted
by Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Brown at the
Fern Ridge schoolhouse, Thursday of
last week, was stricken with heart fail
ure and died iu a few minutes. She
was as well as usual when she left
lionie, but while in church was seized
with pains iu the region of the heart,
and died within five minutes. She
was a most estimable woman, and
leaves a husband aud several growu
children. The remains were interred

Attorney J. F. Moore was arrested
ou Tuesday evening by United States
Deputy Marshal Geo. Humphrey. We
have been unable to learn the true
nature of the iudictmeut found against
Mr. Moore by the United States grand
jury, but rumor has it that he has
charged more thuu his lawful fees as
acting attorney for pensioners, aud
that he Hub unlawfully retained mon
eys In his hands that should have been
paid over to his olieuts, etc. The arrest
which followed the Indictment was a
great surprise In us, as It certainly was
to many others of his friends, if, in

Last Thursday night some sneak
thief entered Hiram Baker's store,
by breaking in the back window. It
was evidently the work of some person
after money, or he was drunk. The
money drawer was robbed, but it only
contained a few coppers, as Mr. Baker
hud taken tbe precaution to take out
all the money before leaving the store,
The only things taken were a pair of
unmated boots, one of which has since
been found, aud some tobacco. This
was all that whs missed, but as Mr,
Baker has a very large stock, some
small articles might have been taken
that have not yet been missed. Several
other articles were taken back as far as
the window, but left there. Mr. Baker
thinks something fell while the thief
was leaving that caused him to drop
the things and run. On the same
evening the window in the adjoining
store budding, which is vacant, was
broken in.

The Corvallls News says: Tbe cred
itors of Wilson & Chase, contractors of
the new buildings at the Agricultural
college, met on Friday afternoon at the
office of Mr. Wullis Nash, secretary of
the board of regents, The amount of
the two final payments on the build
ings, with a small amount of extras,
was $3,525; total amount of debts,
$8,850, Bbowing a small deficiency
amounting to six per cent. After full
discussion of the matters, the oreditors
came to a resolution to ask the board,
through the building committee, to
make immediate payment of the $3,529
for distribution among the creditor!, aa
the buildings bad been completed and
accepted by the architect. , The cred
itors further demanded of the debtors
that they should gives note ut twelve
months date for the six per cent de
ficiency. This the debtors did and the
$3,525 was then distributed pro rata
among the creditors, who released the
buildings frrom all liens and claims
and the contractors and credit us re
leased the board from all further lia
