The body of Carey Crawford was
found last Wednesday afternoon oppo
site the Red Crown Mills, in Albany
by a man who was working at the mill
The body had been in the water, fo
sixteen days.
WolootGeiger,son of Dr. Geigcr, of
Forest Grove, who made his escape
from the insane asylum at Salem
some four months since, was taken
back to the asylum on Saturday last.
He proved not only irrational but
dangerous. Hence his return to the
asylum.
Mr. Henry .Clear, of Knoxville,
Tennessee, is in town visiting his
brotlier-iu-law 8. O. Wallace. Mr.
Clear Is in the country looking for a
location. He has been engaged in the
mercantile business for 26 years.
There 'will be union memorial ser
vices next Sunday morning in the 1st
Presbyterian church, under the aus
pices of the G. A. R. The sermon
will lie preached by Rev. Edward Ec-
cleston, and the music furnished by
the Lebanon Choral Society, All are
invited.
Quite an excitement occurred at Mr.
W.J. Strong's place near Waldo, last
week. A large bear came down with
in about 300 yards of the house and
caught a hog. The boys were awaken
ed by the noise and started out to get
the bear, but whether it was too dark
or they were too nervous too shoot
was never learned, but they did no
get old bruin.
The R. E. M. D. N. L. musical
society, consisting of Jessie Ralston,
Pauline Adams, Pet Smith, Leila
Westfall, Lida Eatou and Tot Cowan,
will give a grand concert In the Band
Hall, lo-nigMt, (Friday.) The pro
gramme will consist of solos, duets,
choruses, tableaux, and pantomines.

A gentleman in the East writes to a
party In this city inquiring about our
fruit industry. He says he has a copy
of a horticultural society report Heat
ing of fruit pests and bow to destroy
them, and he Infers from that, that
our fruit industry Is nearly destroyed
by these pests. Ii appears that a lot
of these circulars have been seut East
through orders of the late legislature
and some very undesireable advertis
ing is the result. Fruit pests are
found here, but they have not destroy
ed our fruit Industry.
The passengers on the southbound
Roseburg local had a narrow escape
from a 'serious accident laBt Friday
morning as they were approaching
Oregou City. A horse was feeding
about 30 ynrds from the track as the
traiu approached the Abernetby
bridge, and at that point the engineer
had to whistle for a crossing. Tills
startled the horse, and it ran upon the
track aud out upon the bridge, where
it fell between the ties. The engine
struck it before it could be stopped,
drugging the horse a short distance,
when it slipped to.one side and fell
Into the stream. The heads of the
spikes-used In fastening the rails down
were broken oft short.
In the U. S. district court Saturday
morning Judge Bellinger made at,
order vacating his previous order
which appointed &. A. Beusellas re
ceiver of the Oregou Development
Company. This action was based
upon a large number of affidavits from
prominent people throughout the Val
ley who averred in the strongest terms
that It was and hud long beeu a mat
ter of eommou notoriety that Bensell
had for years been so completely under
the domination of the late Col. Hogg,
that it would be impossible for him to
"e Impartial. These affidavits were
fllej by the attorneys of Messrs. Blair
aud Brown, ol New York City, hold
ers of the majority of the bonds under
the first mortgage, and who made the
motion to have Beusell removed. No
one has as yet been appointed in Ben
sell's stead, but Judge Bellinger will
' doubtless appoint some able aud repu-
table man.
