V Lebanon Express. H. Y. K1RKPATRICK, Editor - and - Proprietor. City Oicial Paper, Although the invention of the ontton gin has been credited nil those veiire to Eli AVhitney, mod ern writers claim it was in vented by Mrs. Nathniel Green, widow of Gen. Green, of revolu tionary fame. The aim of education should be to tench us rather how to think, than what to think rather to improve our minds, eo as to enable us to think for ourselves, thun to load the memory with the thoughts of other men. Hon. T. J. Black's friends in this state are urging his appoint ment to the Collectoiship of Cus toms of Portland, Oregon. A bet ter choice could not be made by Mr. Cleveland. Mr. Black is a thorough and active democratic leader of long standing. He is honest, energetic and thoroughly reliable capable of filling the po sition with credit to himself and to the complete satisfaction of the 'government. The New York Sun says of the new 25 cent piece: On one side of the coin there are no less than ten repetitions of the number 13. There are 13 stars, 13 letters in the scroll held by the eagles beak, 13 marginal feathers in each wing, 13 tail feathers, 13 parallel lines in the shield, 13 horizontal bars, 13 arrowheads in one claw, and 13 letters in the words "quarter dollar." speed of an electric cur- -rent, which 1t,ie !me 1,9 that of light, tie,000 m,1 If second -suopose a mamge P be sent at this'speed iTom a point on the earth's tsurface. it would go (even times around the earth in one gerund. In eight minutes a message woul.l get to the sun, but to reach Alpha Centauri, the near est of all the stars it would take .three years. Ex. The ruling of Postmaster Gen eral Bissell in not allowing post offices of the fourth class to be lo cated in country 3tores is hardly fair. Where a postoffice pays the munificent sum of $6 per year it is impossible to conduct it proper ly unless in connection with some other business. Thi ruling is liable to bring about spirit of inanity especially in this western country where the communities are far apart and the getting of mails is a labor. In many parts of Oregon the eountry store is the only available place in which to locate an office. Chicago is preparing to put on several hundred extra policemen for the World's Fair year. Appli cants must pass a written exnmina-. tion. It was discovered Friday that some one had worked up a plan by which applicants can se cure the necessary question blanks already filled out in perfect shape. Tne applicant comes to the exami nation room, takes his blanks, pretends to fill them out, slips them into his pocket, substitutes the prepared answers and turns them in. One of them was caught at it.and confessed so much. The name of the man furnishing the bogus papers has not yet been learned. Ex. .,.',. Electricity is now used in trac tion, in illumination, in telegraphy, submarine, and terrene.- in engi neering, in medicine, surgery, in agdculture, horticulture, and flor iculture, in many kinds of mech anism, in manufacturing, in heat ing, in cooking, and in yet other service. There are thousands of electric railways; a new electric ship is nearly completed at one Pacific port, and we have the promise of a new electrical bal loon. This is the electrical age, as well as the age of steam. We can not put any limit, tothe use of elec tricity, There may be other agen cies of nature yet undiscovered that will be serviceable to man kind, It is likely that there will be great times in this merry old world within the next thousand years. N. Y. Bun. The new eruinnv "Nriv York"' lino broken the speed record for armored vessels. , She made 20 knots an our on her recent preliminary trial trip. Oregonians who visit Washing ton write back that Mr. Cleveland is proceeding very carefully in appointments, simply because he conscientiously wishes to make no mistakes. All agree on this point. A Salem Journal reporter has ascertained that Mr. Skinner, who was recently buncoed out of $12500, took no nowspaner. A re ligions paper came to him, but of course dealing largely with the world, gave him no pointers on the ways of the bunco steorer. The correspondent of the Plain dealer, who commits a forgery when he signs himself "Farmer," wants the people and tho newspapers of Oregon to give trie lata legislature a rest. He forgets that there is no rest for the wicked in this world, and probably none in any future state of existence. Koseuurg Review. We clip the following article from a Texas exchange: The State printhre oflice sit Austin is to be sold. This was a costly experi ment in the first place. By what right does the state come in compe tition with her individual citizens? All public printing should he let tc the lowest responsible bidder. NOTICE FOB PUBLICATION.
