President Cleveland evidently reached information of the awful struggle for office in Oregon and to avoid trouble for himseif quietly announced that Senator Vilas would attend to distributing the loaves and fishes in the webfoot state. The senator will soon real ' ize the delicacy ol his position, as the hord of oflice-seekers are pre paring to swoop down upon him. If to survives the seige he will have good cause for congratula tion. Mercury. The Indianapolis News says that a certain larm editor received the following story and sent it to the cuno coiumn collector, woo return ed it because he knew it stated facta and no fiction: A horticul turist had missed many apples every r.ight. Finally he set a watch, expecting to trap his neigh bor's boys. Jn the dim night light he saw limbs of apple trees shak ing, and then he heard the fruit fulling. He had seen no one enter the orchard. Non-plused he crept up to tiie shaking tree. He saw a hedgehog descend from the tree, roll over on the apples until its back was laden with the fruit at tached by the quills, and wabble off. The farm editor didn't doubt the story, but wondered what an insect-eating animal wanted with apples. ''For the worms," triumph antly explained the curio man. CITY AFFAin:.". The Express calls special atten tion to the proceedings of the city council, published in another coi umn, and notes with pleasure that they propose to hold the officers of the city to a strict accountability for the faithful performance of their respective duties. The action of the counoil in in structing the license, committee to notify saloonists and. their bonds men, that hereafter the licensed dram shops must be run within the provisions of the ordinances under which their licenses are is sued, iB one that will receive the hearty commendation of all good citijens, who, with the Express, say that if these pluces must be run at all within our city limits it iB not demanding from their proprietors anything but what the city author ities should sternly enforce, when they assert that the laws governing them will be rigidly carried out. We believe a majority of onr cit izens doubt the wisdom of the council preceding the present one, in repealing Ordinance No. 1, under the new charter, requiring a major ity of the voters within the corpo rate limits petitioning the council in favor of issuing a license before the same Bhould be granted by the propor authorities. The Expuesb at that time, with many of our cit izens, took the view that to prevent strife and bickering among our peo ple when petitions and remon strances were causing bucIi a furore that a repeal of that ordinance would be conducive to to the peace and quietude of Lebanon, and hon estly and faithfully we labored for its repeal. , , Recent tragical and shameful occurrences within our once peace ful town are causing people of broad opinions aud liberal views to ask each other the cause that has so lately brought our town into such fearful notoriety. The ques tion iB tasily answered. The people of the city of Lebanon have confidence in their city oflicers and believe they will fearlessly dis charge their vrliole duty in the mat ter and the Express heartily joins with the people in wishing our city officers God speed in their determi nation to cnrrv out to the fullest extent of the" law the ordinances of the city, governing the liquor traffic. . . President Cleveland has caused consternation among the army of ex-ollice holders who liave neseigca Washingtun demanding that they again be allowed to feed at the public trough, by announcing that the rule of this administration shall be that those who held office during his former torm will not again be appointed to office so long as there are parties of equal quali fications aspiring to the positions which they ask. He thinkB one term of office sufficient to satisfy the greed of the average man, and believes in passing honors aud lucrative positions around among those who are both faithfhl and competent. The roads in the country as a rule are worse than they have been for years. Wheie they were thrown up and graveled they are fine and solid.
