The question of an untimely death ia no longer a contingency fo far as this paper 13 concerned. Mortality tables show that the maioritv of newspapers, like the majority of the hnmr.n tacc, die in infancy. We have past the infantile state and have taken our place as f ne of the established institutions of the town. It requires skillful manage ment, considerable tact and an un usual degree of perse vera nee to nurse and keep alive an enterprise of this kind. The dull reader may envy4 the newspaper man's good fortune, but the inquisitive and and sharp-sighted individual who is able to read between the lines finds that every page has been punctuated by tears and laughter, battle and sunshine snd all the tumultuous changes of a progress ive age. Our friends will please remember that v.c are located on .Main street, are neither paupers nor millionares and invite all our patrons to- visit us, who can do so without losing castft, and we will entertain you hospitably. If cur United States Senators .could be elected bv a direct vote of the people, the Pacific Coast States would certainly have an abler rep resentation in Congress. YVe are reminded of the rotten, leprous system that obtained at one time jn the Unman empire. Statesman ship gauged by dollars and cents it not the kind which is required by a growing republic. We invol untarily associate with the art of nnojiey -getting a class of faculties "which are as much out of place in ihe White House as a monkey in -the sanctuary of the Lord. As the elections are now conducted it is 3ssibie to corrupt a few individu sils and thus ride into position and 3over, but the masses cannot be so corrupted. We want men of a high rder of talent, and this we can ."hardly promise ourselves as- long s3 periodical auctions are held at our State capitals and moncv is -used to buy position by coucealing defect of stature. Many of our -talented men are rich, it is true, "but we must riot conclude from -this that all rich men are talented anen. Not every man who can quell a street fight is qualified to command the armies of a nation; -and to conclude that a speculator in real estate or mining stock is 'ompetent to preside over a na--t Ton's treasurvis unreasonable, il logical, .madness"."' .sober thoughts for solemn people MYSTERY. If the Bible were removed from civilizatioa, it would leave more mystery laebind it than it would take away- From beginning to end "there is mydery in the Bible, but what of it? not a man a mystery to a child? And being such, is his -existence t be denied? The child Limselfis a mystery, and the man 3s but a rotf jkjuaticn of the same cti!5cilty. Ikere is a mystery that is natural and proper, ever .necessary so to say, and there may Jle mystery which is simply arbi trary, or mystery to those only who reffts-e to avail themselves of -.proffered light. Is there any ino Kwjtony so intolerable as life would be without mystery? Every day brings its own secret, and the sur prise of .h coming hour is often it? 'keenest joy. Properly understood, 3t may.be that mystery is but tht longer word for mercy. We arc drawn forward by the power of the unknown. What is bej-ond tlx i.ext curve in the road? May not to-morrow open our prison door". - By such-questioning is melauchoh J:ept at hay, and weakness pre served from despair. All our life ii ct in mystery from the cradle tt .the grave. Reduce the universe -to a self-existent, self-ruling anil fell-terminating machine, and stil there will remain the mysteries 3Iow is it kept together? IIow di'"' come into it? What is the fi; al sipeal of right against wrong? Ano what is there, if any thing, beyonc! death? Materialism is deficient "n compass; it cannot comprehend thcjwhr 1j case. Its analysis of a leaf is admirable, but it is lost an id the secrets, cf the heart; it crea e ,; .more mysteries than it removes and in the long ran it aggravates itself into the greatest m sterv . f -' ail. - .- MAKE-SHIFTS. At. an early meeting of the church it was piopsed to fill up a vacancy, in the -office from which Judas by trans gressiuti fell. Peter lai 1 before tin men and lircMircn an explanation o the ease, and the election was daierm ined by the giving forth of lots. Lam? and impotent conclusion ! Had Pete waited a "little longer he would havf Juoked with contempt and shame up on this miserable shift. Matthias wa elected to the aposllesliip and too!) seurily: he was never heard of more n rebuke which properly finished an old and poor way of doing things viliiout utterly disregarding th prayei fulness and rcligous irnpa'ience of honest nieu who were anxious t keep forms and numbers in pel fee order. After the descent of the Hol Ghost, no lot drawing was needed t enable this san.e Peter to see in Cor nelius the Gentile an elect saint am: 'to detect in Simon ' the sorcerer i; chil-t of the devil. So much for a true jtpiri'tial instinct.
