Church, South, organized a class in Lebanon last Hunday, and will build a parsonage soon. The present season promises to be one of great activity. Anyone desiring work can be accommodated. Over twelve hundred men are con stantly employed in manufacturing the celebrated Studebaker wagons. Recorder Peterson tells us that we will have $200 more to expend on our streets this year than formerly. Thf re was a very perceptible rise in the Santiam this week, caused by the melting snow in the mountains. The celebrated Charter Oak and Jewel stoves and Ranges are sold by Matthews & Washburn, Albany. Ed. Kellenberger, the Switzerland botcher, has placed a canvas in front of his meat market. Every wheel in town (except the wheelbarrow) is in use on Sundays conveying people to and from the springs. Lebanon lodge I. O. O. F. elected S. A. Jsickerson and Jos. Elkins delegates to the grand lodge which will be held in Portlani. Mr. Roco, a former citizen of our town, but at present engaged in busi ness in Albany, was over to see us "Wednesday. We received a request from Washing ton City for two copies of the Express. They will be filed among the archives of the nation. J. C. Goodale, the lumber king of Coburg, paid his respects to the Ex press NVednesday. Read his ad. in another column. Mr. Dobkins has purchased the ma chinery for his machine and- repair shops and will erect his buildings just as soon as possible. W. J. A cigar manufacturar expressed a favorable opinion of our town this week and there is a likelihood of his locating among us. The W. R. An archi tect is formulating plans, the contract will soon bo let, and Lebanon will shortly le the proud possessor of a school' house that will adil very mater ially to the attractions of the town. Capt. E. D. ITagnn, of Brownsville, is now in the employ of a Portland syndicate and will spend the cming season prospecting in- the Blue River and the Coin pooia mines. Unless we greatly misjudge the Capt. ho will make some valuable discoveries this summer. One of our farmers recently violated the Chinese exclusion act in a most fingrant manner. Ho pulled a Ivet in his enrden and found a Chinaman clinging to the roots. If beet cult ore is not prohibited in our State half the Chinese empire will be imported by this route. Mr. Hazen of Sodaville called on the Express this week. He telis us that the frame of the big hotel is up and that five carpenters are at work on the building. Joe Clay pool and Archie Edmund sou came in from Squaw creek, Crook counts, Saturday, being the first to ers tiie mountains this spring. They traveled on snow shoes twenty-eight miles, the snow averaging ten feet in depth. Mr. Claypool says that fully one-half of the cattle and two-thirds of the sheep in Crook county perished last winter. A large company of ladies from all parts of Linn county and representing every caste of society were passing down Main street in Albany gazing curiously about as ladies are accustom ed to doing, when without a moment's warning they were all arrested by the sight of the Ladies' Bazaar and were taken before his honor, II. A pretty good joke is told on a young lady school teacher in a district not a thousand miles from Lebanon. On Monday a ?i:iall urchin entered the school room with exceedingly dirty face and hands. The teacher bade biiii go and wash himself. In a few minutes the boy returned with his hands niccly washed and wiped. His face also had been washed, but onlv the lower por tion had U-cn wiped dry, the rest of his face was dripping with water. On being told to return and wipe his face he sidd, "But, teacher. I cant." Naturally sur prised, the teacher asked why he could n-t follow her instruct ions, "inasmuch as he had succeeded In washing his face ami hands and wiping tiicm so nicely, as far as he had gone. The small boy answered, while the big tears ran down his cheek: "My shirt ain't long enough." The answer was followed by silence, succeeded by a suppressed titter. Our attention was called to a new industry by. seeing hand-bills cullim for 40 tons of chitem (or cascara s.igrats) bark. This bark is being u.-ed both in the United States and foreigu countries as a cathartic and laxative remedy and the call for It ha been enormous in the last fen years; the bark being manufactured intoelixer' cordials, lluid and soml extracts.
