shall never forget the excitement we

the show window of a brokcrks' office,
and to tell the truth I did feel rather

ed to my aristocratic associates, wio
although very big and vellow, have
not travelled half the distance I have.
Why, Mr. Reporter I've taken in an
entire town in oue day, going through
every busi news house, and eventually
on the night of the same day being
dropped into the contribution plate at
church, and transferred to the parson's
pocket. Aud say let me tell you, of all
places for a nit quiet rest give nie the
parson's pocket, of course it is a lone
some place in most instance. I hard
ly ever found much money there to
keep me company, but then its gen
erally eleau and free from tobacco
erumUs. Ugh, I detest tobacco It gits
in a fellows eye and always makes
me feel cqucauiish and tick, but then
a public person has to put up witk all
kinds of treatment and company.
What was the most disagreeable place
I was ever in did you say? W ell I've
been through hot lires, passed many a
cold freezing night, been dropped into
deep wuter, and experieucad mauy
vicissitudes, but I am certain that the
worst fix I Wan ever in was when iu
the possession of mi old whiskey bum,
they did not come by me honestly but
geneeally by stealing or beggklg, the
last bum that had me Ktole me from
the counter of a grocery store, where
the proprieter had carlessly dropped
me. He slipped mo into a greasy,
dirty pocket, but in a very short time
passed me over tho counter of a live
cent beer saloon for a schooner, unfor
tunately I remained in the money till
of this place for two days and during
that time was pa Bed aud repassed
over the bar many times in making
change, and I must suy I never iu in
experience heard such profane aud
rilald conversation or was forced iuto
companionship with a lower or more
brutal class of people 'than the most
of the habitual frequenters of this
place proved to be. How did I get
away from there? The bar-keeper
gaue me to a little geriuan boy In ex
change for a bunch of mint, aud in the
boy's company I took a trip to the
country, taking quite a rest and pass
ing a very time in the toe of a woollen
sock, where the prudent mother of the
boy had placed me. Had anything to
do whh polities? Well I houkl re
mark. I was born under a democratic
administration aud have always stood
by colors come what may. The ouly
time I changeo color was during the
big fire at Seattle, when during the
excitemont I became hot and turned
black, but theu mauy politicians do
this, espesially when it pays, or therei
is a good fat office in sight; in my case
however It was iuvoluntary and if you
look at my face you will see that I
have quite an honest face though not
blessed with much 'ring.' What do I
think will become of me? I hardly
know. You see my first issue was a
failure aud was recalled, I am told
that branch of the family lacked the
word cents and was put to various il
legal uses by sharpei-s. I never did
pride myself on my beauty and per
haps someday my Uncle Samuel will
recall me aud issue a new departure of
tho fivs cent family. Say, now don't
toss me around your pocket to Mr.
Reporter, going down to the Lxpress
office are you to have a smoke, got
tired of me already, believe you'l buy
a cigar, alright, over fhe couuter I go.
