The .railway construction of the United States in 18S3 amounted to 5000 miles, enough to reach from the 1 Mississippi river to tho Pacific coast and back again, yet the averaga length of new lines was loss than twenty miles. The best indication of -he he althfulness of this growth is seen in this fact The wore done was chiefiy in providing feeder for ihe main lines and pushing extensions forward in response to the demands of trade. The south, owing to the si- j tempts now Wing made to develop her J mineral and other natural resources, has had a large share oi the new roads. 3000 of the five thousand miles reported as the complimeut of the. year were laid in ihe country south of Cincinnati and east of the Mississippi, leaving to the Pacific coast and balance. the mighty northwest the There is no town in Oregon with brighter prospects than Lebanon, It being .situated near the center of Linn county, the finest agricultural coun ty in the Etate, Ideated cu sonth fork of the Sasthua at the terminus of tho Ibanoa branch of the 8.
