THAT NEW SCHOOL HOUSE. . e nave no complaint to make at either of our schools, the academy or our public school, and we believe that they are both managed by compe tent teachers, and are both doing a flood work. The first question to settle In regard to our public school building i. does it meet the demands? No one . JUmiKar with school work or who is acquainted with the needs of the same, would stultify them?e!ve3 by claiming that the building 1 either commodious enough or constructed well for a first- elass public school, just such a sc hool s Lebanon needs, and as she must have, to either meet the claims of her present population or to attract others to settle among us. Now the property owners have to pay the school tax whether their children go or not, and if there is not room enough inside they --will have to stay outside, but pay their money ail the same- What we wnl Is the worth of our money, by the chil dren being advanced by the most thor ough and rapid manner without the squandering of needless time. We need at least eight grades, and no one teacher should have more than thre, I in fact, two grades are enough for any one teacher, and no teacher can do themselves or their pupils justice' with 1 sixty or more students and with four grades. We must have a building with mors rooms, of modern construc tion and conveniences if we would meet the demands of an appreciative C xdiblic. Farmers, stockmen and im migrants are seeking and will have the verybest advantages for their chil dren, and if Lebanon will not accomo date them they will go somewhere trlse. It will not do for tax payers to down this question; it is like lilnchc'a ghosst, it will not down. The question as to how the money is to be raised is the one that most concerns us, but we think that when the matter is thor oughly conversed that there is wisdom enough in our town to solve that. UllUWN.ttll.LE. COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION. We had the pleasure on last Sunday of meeting in Brownsvill the genial face of Hon. J. B. It. Morehvck. He had just returned from Eugene City a member of the Committee on Ed ucation, or rather of the State Univer sity at that city. The committee will doubtless recommend an increase ap propriation and some additional teach ing force to the school. The state hon ors Itself by an open hand of liberality to this noble institution. SIX BIBLE NAMES. ns Now that Mr. Bayard has washed Lis hanis of the Sainoan difficulty, Congress appears equally slow in tak- ing action. The Republican members n'tho Senate Foreign Affairs Commit tee are iiidisposud t make rapid pro gress, as they do not know what policy l ie next administration will follow. J 'rotable it is that Mr. Uarrissn vill rteieve the question as a legacy from iii;s administration. Bthat time it is to fee supposed that the affair may have been settled by the prompt action -of England. Neither Germany nor l he United States could afford to giw -Httle. Germany has her hands full " villi herrstchful European enemies, ; tnd this country has no navy with ."Vi-hich to make war. f Whether or not, as Mr. Bayard's -friends allege, Mr. Cleveland hastrcat- d bim "merely as a clerk," he is re ousible for his own political death. '-From the fisheries treaty to the Mo jeco trouble the State Department has xhibitod very little but its weakness, rom tho Keily imbroglio to the sack ville folly Mr. Bayard's administration 1 as beer singularly unfortunate. In ,i voiding vital issues it has become the i val of Dkken's "circumlocution of ' 1 ee." Nor van the blame for this con dition f affairs lie shifted to the Presi dent's bhoulders. The old time saying of "sonu pump kins" is superseded by "hiyou squash," a sample of which can be seen at Mc Hargus' bakery, the squash, not the bakery, weighing eighty-six pounds, this mammoth .production was raised on the farm of Mr. Relnliart, near Sweet Home. During the past week considerable improvements have taken place in the south portion of town. Waters street has been opened and bridged at its connection with Kirk street, giving a theroughfare through the addition, which will eventually be finished through the west side, connecting with the county road and running north of the lumber yard of Meyer Brothers. On the afternoon of last Friuay the Say these names over as many times until you can remember thousand the order in which they are given: Adam, Enoch, Abraham, Sjlomon, Christ, John. Repeat them again and then learn the following bit of table chio nology: 1. From the time Adam was created until the time Enoch was translated wof a thousand years. . From the time Enoch was trans lated until the time Abraham was born w as a thousand .years. 3. From the time Abraham was born until the time Solomon dedicated the temple was a thousand years 4. From the time Solomon dedicated the temple until the lime Christ was born was a thousand years. 5. From the lime Christ was bam until John died was a hundred years. This is the bible history of forty-one hundred years divided. WtJ NotT Now that seroral counties are mak ing vigorous tfforts to have their court houses moved to a more ceutrai point, why not Lebanon make a move to have the county reat? When the Wil Mtnette was the only egrt-HS and ingress for freight and travel, it was well enough to have the cotu tjiouse there, but now since railroads are crossing the country in every direction, and since the eastern portion is settling so fsst what sense r,r justice is ther-: In having the court hens away in It ex treme western border. Th!s county will not always submit to this, anil now is a' good time to begin to agitate the question. xrorK. Thera are many evils which sre more than half cured by hope.. Hope brings geod things about us, not so as to be handled, but so as to be owned and rejoiced in. Hope prophesies to us. Hope makes us free of the uni verse. I am a pilgrim, and life is what I have to travel over; and O I have many dangers and many wants! But hope is my all in all, nearly. Hope is light, and courage, aud a staff; aud when I sit.down, it is a friend to talk with; and when I sutrer, it is an angel to stand by and strengthen me; and when I have wandered away in sin, and repented, and returned to the right pam, then from hope I get my peace oi mimi again. Robe and Rev. El worthy, was discontinued on the even ing of last Wednesday. The Reverend gentlemen have been most happily successful in obtaining converts and increasing the membership of their respective churches. G. A. Dyson, J. Moore, Xate Stand- ish and West ley Ptandish, who have lately returned from the Blue river mines, report a most flattering outlook for the coming summer. A new tun nel has been (started on the "Luckey Boy," from which "pay dirt" is being taken. The Eugene company are making arrangements to operate th6 stamit mill on their claim, and are also making surveys preparatory to open ing a.wagon road from the McKenzie souin 10 tne mountain claims on the Blue river. On Sunday last Rev. J. R. Kirkpat- rick filled his regular appointment at South Brownsville, delivering an an niversary sermon commemorative of the seventy-ninth year of the existence of the Cumberland Presbyterian church. The sermon, a most able ex planation of this organization from its foundation to the present time, was fraught with interesting information, siausiics and figures, ably explained and thoroughly disc issed, being also an earnest Christian appeal inviting all to participate in the practice and doctorings of religion. At the conclu sion of the services four converts were admitted to membership with the church, receiving thc rite of baptism. At the M. E. Church Rev. Elworthy and at the Presbyterian church Rev" Robe, conducted Sabbath services to a full attendance. The Sunday school exercises at the various churches were &tB usual, largely atteuded. T. S.
