School commenced Monday with a good attendance, with Prof. Hunt as principal. C. B. Montague has purchased from M. A. Miller the property formerly owned by Dr. Powell. B. M. Donaca has purchased Thom as PeeblerTs new residence, and has gone to housekeeping therein. The St. Charles hotel now furnishes a free hack to and from the depot. Traveling men should make a note of this. Mr. John Roberts has a force of hop pickers now engaged in his 9-acre hop yard, which will yield very abundant ly this 5-ear. - ' Mr. Parrish takes to hotel keeping in first-class shape. Three weeks ago last Saturday, Frank BehafTer and t wo other gentle men, citizens of McMlnuvlllc, Yamhill county, left for a prospecting tour through Southern and Eastern Oregon, the citizens of that town having sub scribed a eum of mony to assist them on their m's-iion. After spending some time in Harney valley they proceeded on their way back, via Upper Soda and Lebanon, arriving at Soda Springs on Thursday of last week. On Saturday SehalTer and his two companions left camp and went to hunt deer in the hills near the springs. It seems that SchafTer got separated and wandered off by himself, and was climbing a very steep hill when an other party consisting of J. P. Need ham, a man by the; name of Dcpew, and the former's little son were hunt ing in the same vicinity, and while stopping to rest were rolling stones down the hill side. The noise was heard by the other party who, mistak ing it for the stirring of game, began creeping toward them. Needham ob served SchafTer creeping through the dense tmdergrowth, and mistaking him for a bear, shot him. Still sup posing it. to be such, he and his com panions approached the spot, when they were shocked to find their sup posed game to be an old man who lay quite dead, the bullet having entered the unfortunate man's head just above The C.i'atct Industrial Kxlillilt of (lie l'aeine Northwest. The Mechanics' Fair, which opens in Portland on October 6, and closes Octoler 22, promises to le one of the most attractive exhibitionsever held' in that city. 'There will be many new features of an attractive character, and and m all railway lines have placed the transportation rates exceedingly low, it Is expected that the fair will be largely attended by people from all parts of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Northern California. The Second United States cavalry band, the finest on tiie const, will furnish music. The fare via the O. & C. H. It. from Leban on to Portland and return, during the Mechanics' fair will te $4.25. The tickets will also include ticket for ad mittance, once to the fair, and will lie good for six days from date of sale. Tickets for children between 5 and 12 years of age, half the above rates. Mack, formerly of the Baker City Democrat, now of the Yaquina Post, and Mr. Bert. Van Cleave, who are over from the Bay. gave us a call yesterday. Rev. J. H. Wilbur has been selected by the Columbia river M. E. confer ence as a delegate to the general con ference, which will meet in New York next May. Rev. Walton Skipworth will accept the thanks of the Express for typo graphical assistance this week. Mr. Skipworth has not "forgotten the box es" by any means. ' The reeeiots of the O. & C. R. R. at the Lebanon office for the month Aug- ust, 1S87, exceeds those of August 1886 j $916.17, which shows a marked increase 1 for the business of our merchants. j Mr. Ed'. Huston, the accommoda ting conductor on the Albany & Leb anon train, has been appointed mes senger for Weils, Fargo & Co., com mencing with the first of this month. Gen. M. L. Olmstead, department commander of the G. A. R. of Oregon, has been notified that on his arrival at St. Louis, he will be assigned to duty as division commander in the grand parade. Hon. E. B. Mc-Elroy, state superin tendent of public instruction, has se cured and will exhibit, in connection with bis lecture on Oregon and Wash ington, over 100 samples of fine wheat and other grains also fruits. One day last week Mr. Geo. M. Clark left with us a hazel-wood stick four inches in diameter, and nine feet to the first fork. A good sized switch. We would like to see the school marm that could handle it successfully. The O. & C. R. R. Co, hnve consent ed to hold the Lebanon train until 10:15 on the evenings of September 29, 30 and October 1, so that the parties from Lebanon and vicinity can have an opportunity of seeing Philip Phil lip's musical entertainment. On Saturday evening last Mr. E, B. Keebler's six year old son while riding a pony was thrown to the ground and sustained a bad fracture of the fore arm. Dr. Courtney was called and re duced the same. The little fellow is recovering fast as possible. The ease of McGhee vs W. R. Mc Kinnon, on motion of the attorney for the prosecution, was dismissed by Jus tice Humphrey in Albany on Monday last. The court evidently holds that ' a man has a right to protect the good name of his wife, even if an evil-disposed person should lose an ear. Right. Philip Philips onlv can produce, left an impression upon the mintls of all present that never can or will he erased. The solo by Mr. Philips of the "persuasive voice," illustrated by the representation J"a flying angel through the air, produced a scene beautiful and startling. Aided Prisoners to Eacare. Friday sheriff Bently, of Umatilla county, arrived in Portland, having in charge Henry Muller, Frank Haney and Harbin Nuse, en route to the peni tentiary for burglary in the resldeneeof ! Mr. Kirby, at Meacham, June 20th last i Bluntly after the burglary was commit- ted the men were arested and taken to Pendleton and locked up in the county ! jail. Thev were tried and sentenced to one jear in the jieniteutiary at Salem. Soon after the trhil and sentenced Mul ler made his escape by climbing over j the jail wall at Pendleton, sixteen feet in height. lie started on a run up along Wild Horse creek and madethlr- ce at Seio. On Monday evening of last week we enjoyed a real treat In listening to a lecture fit in Prof. Rooi k, .of Michignn, ou the subject now uppermost in the minds of the people temperance. It Is perhaps a well worn theme, but It did not seem so from his original way of treating the topic. There wna a good audience present, although we had but one days notice before hand and our young people, who are only too glad to help on the cause all they can, were prepared with some very appropriate songs. The speaker could be with us but one evening, and therefore said ho would have to con dense four evenings In one, which made the address rather lengthy, but no one seemed weary. He evidently thought there might be Infidels present and gave them some hot shots; in, fact demolished them. On the subject of personal re sponsibility, Ills ideas were thoroughly practical and sensible, but hardly in accordance with much of the namhy pamby style of talking and preaching we often hear which really encoura ges vice by telling how wicked one may be and then reform and be as good as the lest without any trouble about past misdeeds, whose consequen ces might reach others through all eter nity. The Professor is evidently a le liever In backboue and In calling things by their right names, and does not encourage sentimentality. He used the blackboard to make clear bis views like a master, and the young people can hardlj' forget the object of life w hich he enforced upon' them so well, in a way to kindle ambition. He is evidently not a sympathizer with the old hardened toper; probably his ear ly exp; rlence as a drunkard's son, took away any sickly views, and taught hint bare facts, but he is intensely earnest In saving the young and to that end blotting the saloon out cf ex istence. He did not need to say he w as in full sympathy with us in our efforts in unions, it was very appan nt. Nature made him a maniac and ridi cule of the rum power is an effective weapon w ith hint. But I hope all our people Id Linn county will have a chance to hear him, for he will ur doubtedly win votes. In the m an time our vile saloon here Is turning out drunkards on the streets daily, to insult decent ieople. Fights are of al most daily occurrence, and our little city is prospering. (?)
