The submission to the pwpk of an j amendment to the constitution of Ore- i g.m, prohihitinir the manufacture and ale of Intoxicating liqurvns for other than medical and scientific purples, Is the result of the persistent eil'orts ot the temperance veople throughout the rotate. Heretofore the plans for prohib iting have not leen in accordance with the views of a large number of people friendly to the cause. Hut now, the legislature has been prevailed upon to put the question fairly and square ly lw fore the people in a shape and under ciwumstanevs where they will nave to vote "yes or no." It has come to that point in the history of Oregon on this question when no one can consistently remain neutral. The press and the people mast come to the front on one nlde or the other, or take the embarras sing position of standing between "two fires," Such a rxwition will certainly be dangerous as the contest grows warm. We deem it prudent now, that the plan suits us,tosay that we are in faver of it and if permitted to esst a vote next j November, will do so accordingly. far as The Exrituss is concerned, it will always endeavor to do what it can for Hie best interests of the people gen erally. Taking this view of matters, it will certainly support the prohibito ry amendment. It is not to be under stood by this, however, that it will not listen to both sides of the question, but rather invites a fair discussion of the issuscs raised during the campaign. Henry Ward Ueecher, the great sen sational preacher, politician and phil antrophist, died ia Brooklyn, N. Y. lust Wednesday morning of apopkxy. FARM NOTES. If a cow milks easily, a good milker should lie aide to get a"ll the milk in five minutes, and lie will got more than a person who t.ikes ten minutes to do the same work. A nine year old trotter named Pre tender is said to lie the coming wonder. He is by Dictator from Winona, she by Almont, second dam Dolly, (dam f Director, Thorndale and On want,) and flo.OO) has been refused for him by his ownr, Mr. Black, of Frankfort, Ky. The horse has never yet trotted in public. There arc many reasons for soiling butter soon after it is made. One is that, liesides the natural deterioration from keeping, it is constantly losing weight. Evajoratioii of the moisture it contains goes on in all kinds of weather, ami as water goes out air tills the vacant spaces and soon makes the butter rancia. The destructive action of salt in ex on vegitation is turned to account something in destroying weeds on gar den paths, Ac. It can also be taken ad vantage of at times as a corrective to the over-stimulating effects of nitrate of soda and other manure on wheat rops. When these are running too much to straw an application of salt may check this tendency and prevent lodging. Srme of our farmers use salt on grass lands as a compost with vegi table matter. An old farmer says that there is no feed so good to keep animals in flesh during winter as scalded oats. For mares, cows and sheep that are to raise young, it is superior to almost any other" feed, as it not only puts the ani mal in good con rl it ion to furnish milk abundantly, but the young at birth are strong'and active. Wheat bran is also an excellent feed for breedinr ani mals, given in the form of a mess. The old fashioned dasher churn is a liarbarion relic of tlie past. Thare is no necessity for tugging away for an hour in order to make the butter come. In fact, milk is churned no longer the cream ln-ing separated from it arid the butter being made by compelling the cream to fall from the top of the churn to the lMttom, instead of plunging into it with a dasher bored with holes. Hence, In procuring a churn, get one that revolves, a it will greatly lessen Hie ia.-r a..u a.ioru toe c..,.ooi.... Of SUeOCW". i . ! . ,1 . as . , .1.. 1. - Suliscribe for Tifi; ExrHE- ?2." The temporary change of time in on the narrow gauge, says the Silverton Ajmeaf, will enable Receiver Scott to have engines and track put in condi tion for mail service, which will le put on March 1. New offices will Ik? es tablished along the road, and the con venience thus inaugurated will prove of great value to the narrow gauge folks. Everylmdy is wishing the nar row gauge sui-ecss, for already the ruth less band of competition is felt, but with a line by boat to Salem they are getting their share of Salem business by making a tli rough rate on grain to Portland and taking it to Salem for milling; and from th-? Portland end they compete for Oregon City business by' boat. This together with the ad vent of a Sunday train for Salem und the bright (heretofore dark) proscct of a railway bridge ut Bay's landi. g across the Willamette, will surely show that there is indeed sonu thing in the narrow gauge.
