Vol. 2H THE SCIO TRIBUNE |1.75 tho Year SCIO CELEBRATED THE I 4TH APPROPRIATLEY Fireworks and Firewater was Noticeably Absent—Good Fellowship Prevailed Scio city was depleted Saturday. July Fourth, upon the occasion of the 149th anniversary of the nations birth, but withall the people who remained at home or in the com munity certainly enjoyed the day and the festivities provided by the Sokola at their park, about two miles southwest of Scio. For several weeks the lodge has been working on clearing the small park on the Lewis Young place, and have transformed it into a lieautiful place for gatherings of all kinds. It is well shaded, and a equate laid off for calisthenics as provided in the work of the lodge ami which has for the making of well rounded men, women, girlsand boys. Buildings have been err acted for the purpose of conducting stands and other attractions, and ilagpole displays old glory and the emblenm of the order. Not much was doing during the morning hours, for the members were busy in getting everything in readiness for the afternoon festivi ties The local Sokol band, assisted I by members of the Sokols of Port land. furnished music for the after noon At 3:00 o’clock the many lieautiful drills and exercises were executed, first by the bovs and girls, then by the older girls, the women, and the men. These were greatly enjoyed by the large crowd present. A grab game was indulg ed in bv the men of Portland and Scio, in which a handkerchief was placed on a stick, numbers assigned to each man on a aide, and tho leader ealls a number, they making a run for the handkerchief, and if the one grabbing it can get back to his line without being tagged by his opponent he is thus seeing a point for his side. Portland won by 15 points to 9 for Scio. In a tug-of-war. Scio bested Portland, pulling their antagonists over th« line in less than two minutes. The tug tie tween the Scio and Portland women resulted in Portland pulling the Settles over i n less than a minute. In the evening a big dance was stared in the Z. C. B. J. hall and the building was packed to its cap- acity. Al times it is said if a hand ful of beans were thrown Into the air thry would not have reached the door for ten minutes, the People were so thick on the floor daneing. One of the pleasant features of the evening was several accordeon solos by a man from Tacoma, and he is said to be one of the finest on the coast. Report says something over 3400 was realized during the after noon and evening. At noon Saluday a picnic dinner was held at the grove, and on Sun day a free dinner was given at the hall. Sunday afternoon, in the hall more exhibitions were given of the calisthenics practiced by the Sokols, i and these were said to be far super ior to those given at the grove. Every movement was exec uted perfectly, and all because it was on a hard floor and not in sawdust. The Scio team won two out of three games of volley ball by scores of 15 to 7 and 15 to 12. This will prove « great advertise ment for this community, for the Sokols have here the largest and best lodge ua the esstt, sad the SCIO OREGON.
