FEEDING THE HAND
On many occasions the Tribune
has pointed out the fact that the
railroads are among tbe heaviest
taxpayers In Linn county, the S P.
paying eomethiog over 7 per cent of
the entire county tax. and in addi
tion must maintain iU own trackage
and other repairs, and has insisted
that the public waa not fair in pat
ronizing trucks and stages to the
detriment of the largest tax pavers
in the county—the railroads
Up to last week the Tribune stood
practically alone on thia sui ject.and
had begun to feel that sooner or la
ter it would have to abandon it*
stand for a square d**al for the rail
roads. The Tribune is now glad to
note that the Albany Business Men's
Association, at it's noon luncheon
last week, went on record ot latx>-
ing the trucks and for patronizing
the railroads. They have seen, as
we have pointed out. that in addi
tion to the tazes the monthly pay
rolls of the railroads in Linn county
approximates *50.000, and contin
ued use of the trucks would mean
the reduction of help on the rail
roads. It waa pointed out at that
meeting, we are told, that the little
saved in patronizing the trucks is
more than offset by increased taxes
to keep the highways in condition
for them.
This is recognizing the hand that
feeds, ar.d we hope every communi
ty will follow suit.
