CIVIIJtATJON Editor Scio Tribune : In looking over the annaJ* of his tory, it *eem strange that drgreda- lion and shame always follow educa tion and civilisation. When Greec an<i Rome attained the smith of their enlightenment, they went «town. The more educated and enlight«<ne«i the people and nations be-com«, Ute mon- unjust and intolerant they grow. Ed- ucation, which is *ai«i to be the moth er of civilisation, ought to make people more just and humane, an«l when it doe* not do thia, it b« come* a misnomer, which has ended the nations that have preceded ux. Th«- boast of our educat«-d anal enlighten cd nation, as lieing the grandest in all history, overlooking the fact that rot and decay la slowly eating their way into the very vitals of the U.S.A. The people are becoming more and more intolerant of each other’s rights. Corruption in state and national af fairs I* growing by leap* and bounds, an«l the mystery to me is why an educated and enlightened people will uphold such procedure by thia «acre»! right of branchiae. 9 But such ia the history of th« an- eient and modern world. It ha* been said “You cannot en- slave a free, educated and enlight ened people,” But we have no max im saying they can not enslave them- »rlw*. which we are sure rapidly doing. There are two kind* of slavery. One is Mdf-impowd, the other is^iut over by political privileges and skull duggery. When we voted to put ourselves in bondage to debt, build gooal roads, is sue bond*, pay interest, etc., we were playing to the aelflsh interest of the moneylenders, saying they should not be taxed nor pay taxes upon their money invested in thi* way, which ha« placed the whole huiMen of taxa tion upon land.
