The Committee on Ways and Means
has reported a bill to forbid the
importation of opium to be used in
the manufacture of heroin. Heroin
is considered tne most dangerous of
all habit forming drug*. The Unit­
ed States Public Health Service, the
Army, the Navy, and the United
States Veteran* Bureau have for­
bidden its use. and th* American
Medical Association has condemned
it as a useless drug from the medi­
cal standpoint. This bill, in connec­

The committee on appropriations
have included in the Agricultural
Appropriation Hill the full amount
of 110,000.000 authorised by law
for r ad* in the national forests.—
»4.700.000 is directly appropriated
and the Secretary of Agriculture is
authorized in addition to this to en
icr into contracts for th* sum of
$5,300.000 more. Representatives
from the West are working to have
the direct appropriation increased
to a* nearly the full amount of
S10.000.000 a* possible.
('.-ngr.-man Hawley appeared
re the Committee on Rivers and
Harbor* to urge the adoption of the
rej> >rt f the Engineers for the Im-
pr-vement of the Siualaw river and
re rivvl favorable setion. The im­
prov* nent include* the removal of
<>ne shoal Mow Florence and Cush­
man at a cost of $74,000, and will
provide a channel twelve feet deep
nt low water. The project also pro­
vides for maintaining this cahnnel
after it i* constructed at an estimat­
ed cost of »20,000 per year. All
the projects approved by the Engin­
eers for improvement in this District
are now adopted. It is stated that
no other District in the country can
•how u record as good. Thirty dif­
ferent projects have been favorably
reported by the Engineers since Mr.
Hawley has been in Congress and
thev are now all adopted.
The national parka appropriation
of f7.5OO.OOO will be joed to eon
structing roads. A tentative aUnl
will eat us up.
That if we will patronize the
railroads, both for travel a> d freight,
it will help them to keep paying
their taxes, which is the highest of
any taxpayer in the county?
That two new businesses have
been established in Scio in the la*t
week, and more are to come?
That the new factory for the re­
pair, building and manufacturing of
furniture and other such work,
soon lie in operation? That it
changed hands and the work
equiping it is now in process?
That this year will see Scio
this community forge ahead as it
has never done before, and all be­
cause the sign* of the times are
pointing westward and to the Forks
of the Santiam?
That all of the Willamette Valley
will soon be a network of electric
wires leading to farm home* and
businesses, furnishing light and
power to nearly every home?
