thoM- which have only irrain food
and what bug» and worm« they can
pick up on free range, recent exper
iments made by the U. S. depart
ment of agriculture show.
The birds u«ed in the experiments
were given condition« as nearly like
those on a normal farm as possible.
The experiments were re|ieatrd un
der different conditions and in diff
erent years, to avoid as far as pos
sible any error due to the varied
characteristics of the birds.
The average farmer teed« very
little meat, fish, or animal protein
feed of any kind to his poultry, and
consequently get« few egg» during
the late fall and winter when eggs
are selling at highest prices.
In the exi>erimenta conducted on
the government poultry farm, pens
of pullets on free range were fed a
mash of corn meal, bran, amt mid
dling» and u »cratch mixture of
wheat, oats, and corn. This is a
greater variety of grains than is
used by many farmer». In addition
the birds had absolutely free range
on land where bugs, green feed and
worms were plentiful. Other pens
were given the same ration, with I
pound of commercial meat scrap
added to every I pound« of mash
The pullets without the meat wrap;
laid only '.»<• eggs apiece I which is
more eggs per hen than the average
farm Hock lays), while th»«« receiv
ing meal scrap averaged from 125
to ISO eggs apises.
.Meat scrap is not produced on
most farms and haa to lie bought at
a higher pnew than grain, It pro-
ducc» egg«, though, several cents a
dozen cheaper than where no meat
wrap is used. Milk products or lish
give as good results a» meat in in
creasing egg production.

Washington. D. C. Alieenteeism
tn the senate has become such a
habit that it became necessary to
transfer from one committee to an
other Senator Borah's resolution for
an investigation of the contribution«
to presidential campaign funds
In
asking such transfer Senator Borah |
explained it was necessary becauar i
absence of senators had made it im-
nosaible to get a quorum of the com
mittee to which the resolution wa»
originally referred.
"It is difficult to get a majority
of any committee in «ession now
ow ing to the alienee of so many
senators,’’ sai<1 Senator Borah.
Senator Thomas pointed out that
the senate was transacting business
with only a handful of m-nator» pre-i
wnt. sometimes (Mowing appropria-
lions of millions of dollars with only
a few members in the chamber.
Frequently it ha« tieen necessary to
direct the sergeant at arm« to re
quest the presence of senator».”
It ia in this way that the majority
party ia attending to the nation'a ■
business under the commiaaion given
j to it in the congressional election of
1918; it ia merely marking time as
part of its policy to do nothing until
after the November election.
I Adopt the principle "no work no
pay" and a quorum will always be
on hand.- Ed. 1
