STARTING A BALKY HORSE
ELECTRICAL ENERGY
Did you ever think what a wonder­
ful thing electricity is? And yet
nobody know* nor can comprehend
just what it is. We know that the
friction caused by the rubbing of
two bodies tmrether thst a power i*
generated and »uch power we have
named "el*-etricity."
We
have
learned how to harness this power
and apply it In many useful ways.
Yet we know a* little about the
"why" of the matter a* did good
old lien Franklin when he brought
down lightening from the heaven*
on a kite string about 175 year*
ago.
The first application of electricity
to useful nurpose was the discovery
or invention of the magnetic tele­
graph in 1X35 by S. F. B. Morse.

in 1H66. which connected the new
world with the old. by telegraphic
cable. Since that date no further
development was marie of the elec­
tric current to the service of man

I* now in use all over the world.
Since that date the rapidity with
which useful applications of the
electric current have been made
almost stun* one.
We now light our street* and
houses with electiicitv, can heat our
houses qr cook a meal, pull train*
of car* or use electric power for
any purpose where power is requir­
ed. Now we have learned to dis­
pense with the wire to convey mes­
sages and wireless telegraph is in
use ail over the world. The dis­
abled ship at sea can send out the
S. 0. S. call and thousands of live*
and millions of dollars in property
value* have been and are being sav­
ed through our knowledge of and
application of the "wireless " Just
a few day* ago many live* of our
soldiers were saved off the coast of
Ireland, Ix-caum- the wirvleae sum-
mond aid and it wa* promptly given.
The wirelea* telephone i* now in
course of development and will, no
doubt, be *o perfected in a few
month* or years that it will become
of practical use.
Experiments in the use of the
electric current in many fields are
being made and manv useful appli­
cations of this subtle agent may be
e spec ted in the future. One man
has reported an increase in the pro­
duction of eggs by making the day
appear longer to his barnyard fowls.
Another man reports that the plac­
ing of electric wire underground in
hi* garden has stimulated th* growth
»f vegetables. And yet we cannot
any what this subtle agent is.
