THE
WAR
SITUATION
A vast number of th«- people of
the United Stat. «. do not recline
that this nation la at war and that
it may re«|uire every dollar of our
national wealth, every man of avail­
able age an«! every ounc* of the
food wc produce, to win it.
We know that we are paying war
prices for what we eat ami wear
ami that we receive war prices for
what we may have to sell; we know
that our young men are volunteer­
ing ami l>eing selected for army ami
navy service and that we have an
armv of a half million men now in
France, or soon to go. Still we do
not seem to realign that we are
actually up against grim vissaged
war of a magnitude, heretofore un­
known and of a duration yet to be
ascertained. Nor will we I m - vih I o
realize the fact until our American
boys arc assigned a sector on the
battle line ami long lists of kilted,
wounded or miming are given pub­
lication.
While it is true that we hav«- sub­
scribed liberally to two war loans
and have given goodly sums to the
Red Cross and Y M. C. A. funds,
no man nor woman has hud to make
a sacrifice in order to do so. We
have aimplv been Investing and Rie­
ing our surplus.
War means sacrifice and we will
not arrive at the realizatnm of the
fact, until we arc forced to make a
sacrifice. True, it is something of
a sacrifice to hsve our young lualy
bovs leave The home circle to. pos-
aibly. never return. We let them
go in sorrow, yet there is a feeling
of compensation and patriotic pride
in knowing that our boy is helping
to fight the battles for humanity
and our pride will be increased to
the nth degree when he comes home
from the war a hero.
