X * * i , X • K. t *■ ’I t The Eugene Register, of last week, published an article explana tory of the meaning of the German word "kultur." The article holds out the idea that the German people have been educated to think that th» Germanic (atopies are superior to the other peonies of the earth in noint of scientific attainment and in general civilization. and it is their duty to deMM-minat«- this no called "kultur" in the other nations of the earth, rim to the extent of using force to do so. They assume that they should, because of their fancied superiority in *>me of the fields of science, become the rulers and masters of all other peoples and the present war waa inaugurated to en force or establish thia falsely assum ed superiority. Tbe opinion sent forth by the Register seems to have good ground*. let us me. One of Germany’s stock in trade assertions Is; "The war was forced upon us and we are simply defend ing the Fatherland.” The develop ments and history of the war does not warrant this awertion. Within a few days thereafter, the Austrian govern ment itwued an ultimatum to Serbia, followed closely with a declaration of war on Serbia. Russia then came into action by declaring war on Auatria-Hungria, Germany then got busy and declared war on Russia and at once set her srmi«-s in motion Strange to -ay these German armies, instead <>f n.arching east ward to meet the country upon which she had declared war, took uu n westward line of march, with France and her capitol, Faris, as thtnr goal of attainment. Belgium imposed a block to the march on Paris and her country was laid waste and devastated as a conse quence. But the Belgium troooa held ut> the German advance long enough for France to mobilise her armies. This is a synousis of Ger many's activitits at the beginning of the war. Does these facta indi cate that Germany was forced into the war? Does it indicate that the German empire waa in danger of invasion by the French? On the contrary, does it not indicate that Germany was the aggressor all along the line? Auatria-Hungria and Serbia were in a fair way to settle their diffi culties and would have done so if Germany had not imposed a veto thereto.
