TO ELECT DEMO that tliere 1« a strung relation be tween the large republican legisla tive majority and the forty or fifty l««urcaua they have establiahvd? The rem«-dy is, destroy thia over- whelmning republican power in the l«*gislature bv electing democrats wherevi-d poarible. Since th«-, office of the legislator is no longer politi cal in any ma-, except to prrpe- tuate this lieausocracy. the people, in self defense, should dmp all perwmcl and political feeling ami «•nd men to the l«-gi»laturc whose leading purpose will lie to demolish this beaurocralic machine which owes its existence to republican legislatures. As a matter of fact, republican tax payers do not fancy being over burdened with taxes, any more than do democrats Only party prejudice has held them in line heretofore. But The Tribune opines, there will ?* • th" Th* r'' seems to lie a grim determination CRATIC LEGISLATORS on |art of averags voter to It may tie aasume<| as a fact, not disputed, that every taxpayer In Oregon feels that our ts» burden is over heavy and that our state gov ernment. with its numerous com missions. Inspector* and what not. has liecome cumta-rw«m«- am! unne cessarily troublesome ami fretful to the people. So gradual has this Insiped growth been grafted upon our state giivranment with Its multitu dinous army of officials, that the people do not realise the unpleasant ness of the iniquitous system, except when the annual taxpaying -lay ar rives and he compares the receipt he receives from the tax collector with a like receipt he received fmm the same source fifteen or twenty years ago. When the taxpayer finds that, while he owns the same farm today that he has for many years, with its productiveness somewhat impaired, he finds he must pav taxes upon the homestead double th«* amount he did two <h«cadcs ago and without receiving corresponding benefits. To illustrate: Some weeks ago a pure food inapt-ctor visited our town. Observing stock food on the shelves of one of our merchants, he informed the merchant that the license trv for selling stockfood was 110 per year. As the merchant would not aell more than llo to 115 worth of the food in a year, he con cluded the sale of stock food was not profitable. We have a tn-aureau to look after weights and measures throughout the state. Formerly each county- had its own inapt>ctor, who made occasional trips all over the county to are that merchants and dealers were not swindling the p«*ople Now the whole business is in the hands of a state inspector wh«». probably, has a small army of inspectors whose main occupation is to draw their salaries. Scio has not Karl a visit from one of these functionaries since Judge Lovelee, <>T Lebanon. as county ins|H-ctor. was here two years ago in that capacity. Yet the cost is no lews while we get no service worth consideration. Them- are only two examples of a detestable beaurocracy which has been foisted upon the taxpayer th«* chief object which is to jay salaries to a lot of unnecessary and needless official* The benefits they confer upon the people are nil. Yet they have their hands in the state treas ury and our legislatures of the past have had neither the inclination nor sand to lop off the barnicles. The republican party has a very large majority at our elections. So large that the half-dosen democratic members of the legislatures for the past several sessions, felt real lone some and were powerless to prevent thia building up of a beaurocracy and ths consequent increase of the taxburden May we not justly claim Ws'-4 *’ ♦ the past few yes ft repealed and, if nearly one pound); fat. 0.36 (more nt-crssHry. r<-enacted -»n a saner than ona-third of a piundi; milk I mms F i»r instance, there is m> sugar, 4 «6. lactic arid. 0.33 (or reason for paying an official a very one-third of a pouml in eveiy 100 large salary when he would serve pounds); ash. 0.75 or three-quarters just ns ably am! «-ffictently for a j of a pound in every hundred The*«- sum one-third l«-*a. or for what he eb-nw-nls of fo«wi value contain«*! in | imi pounds of wh«'y. should produce could earn in pnvote life.
