While it is true that t'alhoun covered hia tracks in a way which made it difficult to establish his guilt, still all disinterested and honest mind«l men believe that his guilt haa been «-stabllsh«! beyond doubt. While we may question th«* wisdom of granting immunity to the brib«t, Cal houn should not be rxtended any favors on that account It is just such results in our court trials aa that of Calhoun, which causes us to doubt the integrity of court and jury. Calhoun had any amount of money at hia di«|M>sal for his defense. He secur«l th«- very brightest lawyers and their number was sufficient to cover every possible point which could be brought to issue. The people was repreeented by Francis J. Henry and two or three aaaociates. On the one side waa arrayed the very beat talent which could be obtain«!, on the other, the side of the p«»ple, only Mr Henry aiuf two or three assistants, Mr. Heney being the master mind which directed the conduct of the fight for the parople. It is not s matter of sur prise that a mistrial result«!.
