Morgason At every election when there is snls sue batwean licensing or prohibit- inp the sale of intoxication? liquors votes for license are always urged on the ground that the money re- cteved will help pay the public ex penditure and thus reduce direct taxation. This argument seems plausible, and heretofore positive proff that it has been lacking. The recent attempt of Governor Bates of Masssachusetts to secure one-half of the license fees for tho state lnsead of one quarter, has supplied the proof desired by the friends of the prohibition. At the hearing in Bos ton the mayors of nearly all the lic ense cities in the stalo were on hand to testify that not one of these cities could rossibly get along without all the money they are now receiving from license fees. In nearly every city it was claimed that taxes had raised to the higeat limit, and no more money could be expected from that source and if the revenue from Jiguor license was reduced their was ¡no way In*, which It could be replaced.
