Ramuel Bane, of Corvallis, who has been engaged In the rearing of China pheasants for pleasure for the past two years has found that con siderable profit attaches to this part I of the poultiy business. About two ¿rears ago he caught a young hen pheasant that had become chilled by the ruin, and later found a cock with its wing broken, which he amputated. With these two as a darter he has succeeded in rearing as fine a flock of the beautiful gtmo birds as can be found anywhere. Il 8 an interesting sight to watch Mr. Bane feeding his birds, for they are as tame as chickens and fly up and perch on his hands and arms and fight for the grains of wheat he scat ters over himself. Last week Mr. Bane shipped fif teen pairs to Chehalis, Wash., to be turned loose in the country, the county court being the purchaser. A few days ago an order for twenty pairs had to be refused as Mr. Bane did not wish to reduce any further the number of his birds, According to his statement this business is much more profitable than the chicken industry. It only takes about half as much feed for the pheasants as for chickens, and eggs retail easily at $2.59 a dozen. A pair of birds brings $5. The hens are prolific layers, three of his birds during the last season having laid 195 eggs. At the rate of $2.50 per dozen this maxes a gross profit of these birds of over $40. Sold ns mature birds the profit would be immensely increased. Mr. Bane uses an incubator and brooder for hatching and rearing the little onus Deeds recorded: W C Burkhart to Silas Living stone 6 acres $ 600 Thos O Montgomrey to Eve COO line Montgomrey 22.02 acres Sarah Barker to A F Albert shn 2 lots Peoria 200 Wm Ralston to Mrs B R Bi lyeu lot 7 hlk 164 H’s ad 1300 Frank Robertson to A L Wed die I lot Swpet Home 50 M L Zlgler to C O Zimmerman 16.68 acres 650 M T Powell to Clyde Powell 1 acre 400 J M Donaca to J E Lindley 1 lot Lebanon 20 Bliss I) Brown to Henry Lyons 174x80 feet Lyons 1 8 H Lyon to Henry Lyons 1 lot Lyons Patents J P Hawk anti Win Price. There is no.v pending in Congress a bill introduced by Hon. Walter P. Brownlow, of I’ennessee, and the lion. Jacob H. Gallinger, Senator from New Hampshire, appropriat ing $24,000,OOu, National aid for the building of wagon roads. This sum is io lie distributed to each State according to its population, except that no state is to receive less than $250,000. The states or counties re ceiving this money must add a like amount, so that $48,000,000 will be expended in the building of wagon roa Js. C lonel Brownlow says that we have over 2o0,000 miles of the finest railway in the world, more miles of rail way then all of tiie rest of the globe put together, yet we h ive the poorest wagon roods of any civilized country. He believes ttiat no other one thing will do this country so much good as the building of wagon roads us provided for in this bill. As they are to be built in every state in the Union, they will be es- peclally valuable as an object I ‘»son. Experience has shown that w here ever good roads exist every one wants more of them.
