Dear sir: In reply to yonr letter re questing information as to an estimate of the cost of a preliminary survey through Wheeler County, permit me to say that Grant County has et aside f 3,000 to be used by this office in locating a line through Grant Co. This will not be sufficient for $ definite purvey annousni it can De used to advantage and l am in hopes that we can secure cooperation from the U. S. Forest Service. As the road between X5rant and Baker Counties will pass thru the .National lorest, it is quite probable that the Govern ment can relieve us of this section. In such case, we can probably get a pretty fair preliminary survey thru Grant Co. for the money a -vailable. It would be well if Wheeler Co. could sel aside a like amount. Hqwever, it is quite probable that we could fnake , an equally good loca tion' thrq. Wheefer Co. for a Jittlc les. have a very com petent man whom I could flssign to. this work, and I (im 'sure that any amount which; jour county court feels that ; it coqld ' allpt to this work can be expended to ad vantage in Wheeler County. I will personally follow the work ' very closely and - see that no funds are wasted and any surplus returned to the county treasury, I do; not plan to begin wprk iii Grant Co. until we get some definite word from the adjoining counties, as it would . be . useless to spend these' county funds unless there:, is some assurance that this ; isolated section' could be connected up thru the ad joining counties to the out side world, The inclosed map will indicate some, of the outlets and connections. Wheeler. Co., .you will note, .would derive very great ben efit. 1 am not sufficiently ."well informed to say whe ther, the connection w ith the Polumbia ..River Highway estimates bv local engineers in different counties? Yesterdav, I wrote the i - County Court of Baker County endeavoring to point out the advantage to Baker county of a collection, thru to Ontario with a branch lino to Baker thru Unity. This whole matter rests practically withi Gant and Wheeler Counties as they are by far the most inter ested, and you can count on us to do any thing within our power to assist in any plan which you care to back. I am also inclos ing a large scale map which was transmitted to the County Court of Baker County to illustrate their interest in this thru trans contiuental lint,' Very respectfully, John H. Lewis. State Engineer. To the voters pf Wheeler Coun ty; I herein announce myself as a Repulican candidate for the of? fice of County ScoqoI Superinten dent. In coming before the people of Wheeler County, I feel that 1 rep resent thogreatest problem and asset of ihe age - the education and traning of the youth of our land If elected, I shall certainly do everything within my. province to further the educational inter ests of every boy and irirl in Wheeler County.
