Public Schools Forever
A Principle laid down in Mass
achusetts Bay Colony in 1647
Public education, supported and urerTlsJ by the 1ate. was the original
American educational programme. It was inaugurated In 1647. when th
Massachusetts Buy Colony ordained that every town of fifty nous. holder
should provide public school for the use of ALL. the reopte. This law pro
viding for universal compulsory education was made national in KS?. when
government recorded Itself to the effect that public schools and the means
of education stall bo forever encouraged.
Thus our forefathers foresaw, with that rare wisdom which marked their
deliberations generally, thai education of American youth In the public schools
was a necessary means to the end of moulding an elightened cltitenry and
through It perpetuating the' growth and development of American Institutions.
What our forefathers saw; what was true then. Is equally true today.
By educating all our children In the public schools, so that they may oecome
imbued with common ideas and ideals as to the things which mate for patriot
ism and fealty to our Institutions; by teaching them English only and by
teaching them history from the standpoint of an all-Amerlcan patriotism and
i.ot that of the glorification of any one class or creed above another by go in
these things we shall build up unified America and weld a united people.
Let us here tn Oregon do our part now. Vote 314 X Yes.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Now Is the Time for Passage of School Bill
Vote 314 x Yes
Passage of the Compulsory Public School Attendance bill now this year
will insure that a minimum number of private schools and private scuiwl
pupils will be affected. Of the 36 counties of Oregon 16 are at present with
out any private schools whatever. The combined aggregate of pupil in all
the private sch'jois in five other counties Is fewer than 20O. The total
attendance at the private schools, of the grarcmar grades, of Oregon la about
9341. The total attendance at the public schools, of thi grammar grades.
Is about 131.6S9. Surely if the publ c srhools are good encuga for the 131, 6sS,
they are also good enough for las other 9841.
At present, while the private schools are ffw and nmalt. is the time to
tn-iki the change propesej by the puliic school bill.

that bank deposits in hard

Always a period of depres
