Business and profes-1 e , Sional men, farmers and labor- j er every body in fact, Will be. . , v. , . I expected to do their bit. If we are to send an army to Europe we must accept the re sponsibilities which go with war fare. It is not enough to cloth and feed the boys in blue. They must be taken care of when they are wounded and it takes money to purchase medical sup plies and maintain physicians and nurses in the field. In this war, as in all other wars, the responsibilities of raising the funds rests with the Red Cross, an organization which knows no flag but the flag of humanity and which must hear the brunt Of the work Of careing for the ; , , , . . sick and wounded who are brought back from the trenches Neither Springfield nor the tributary country are going to turn a deaf ear to an appeal of this character. The money will be raised and it will be rais ed without any serious difficul ty. Springfield has never yet failed to respond to the call of patriotism, and it isn't going to hesitate or fail in the present emergency. LOCKJAW OR TETANUS In the early period of the Eu ropean War, many cases of lock jaw or tetanus developed in the wounded of the allied armies. This very fatal disease is caused by a bacillus which is often found in garden soil, street dust and in the earth in the vicinity of stables. In order to cause tetanus, the germ must lodge in a wound and find suitable conditions for its growth. In juries in which clothing or for eign matter is forced widely or deeply into the tissues are the most dangerous because the tetanus germ can only flourish in places into which oxygen can not penetrate, just as toadstools grow best when sheltered from the sun. As soon as the stress of war conditions premitted, all badly wounded men were immediate ly given injections of the serum against tetanus as a routine pro cedure to prevent this dreaded disease. The use of the anti toxin caused a prompt reduction in the number of cases and the control of tetanus in the armies can be justly cited as one of the ways in which science is helping valor to win the war. This subject is of especial int erest at the present season be cause Fourth of July injuries especially from blank cartridges are apt to be followed by lock jaw if they are not promptly and properly treated.' The gen eral adoption of the "Sane Fourth" has done much to re duce the number of these ac" cidents and suitable medical at tention has prevented the devel opment of tetanus in almodt every instance. In view of the serious results which may occur, It seeniB wise to again warn nil parents that wounds from toy pistols, fire crackers, and firearms aro al ways dangerous and all persoiu hurt in this way, even though ..the injury appear trlval, should be taken nt once to a competent physician for treatment, espec ially to ascertain if the serum should be injected.
