PLAN AH AIR PATROL FROM EIGHT STATIONS Dirigibles and Seaplanes at Each For Coast Work Scout Boat Preparations. A Joint army nnd navy toard Is study ing the Atlantic and gulf coasts pre paratory to tho establishment of eight aeronautic stations, which, besides hav ing two dirigibles and six or eight sea planes each for aerial patrol work, probably will serve as bases for the new 110 foot coast scout boats, of which the navy will order more than 100 In a few Jays. Sixteen dirigibles nnd a sufficient number of seaplanes already have been contracted for, and officers and men for (he nlir service are being selected to be scut to the station at Pensacola, Fla., for training. A school dirigible for Ibo station Is alout ready for delivery. The eight stations will be distributed along the' coasts to cover strategic areas to be determined by the board. Each will require six officers and forty men. The only station site already defl ultely selected Is that at Coco Solo, near Colon, canal o)ic, fpr which an appropriation of 1,000.000 to establish a Joint aviation and submarine base wns asked of the inst congress. The project la expected to go tbrough nt the ccmlug special session. Funds for tbo other stations will also bo sought nt that time, but the department has emergency appropriations sutllclent t begin the work at once. The dirigible!, are to be delivered within four months. At present no stations for tbu Pot-lti const arc being prepared, although tlu chain of coast patrol buses will bo. ex tended uloug the entire coast line as rapidly as machines can be obtained and men trained. The Immediate plans require lu tli uext four mouths the training lu bun dllng dirigibles of fifty otliccrs mid Wii men nt Pensncola. Crews for the sea planes nro already under training, but their number will have to be Increased largely without delay. In providing btats to aid In the tusk .it guarding the coasts navy experts would prefer u standard type 130 font steel boat for patrol uud submarine basing work, but in the Interest of speidy construction have determined on 110 footers with wooden hulls, so Unit builders of wooden boats cau share In the work. Orders will be placed later for some small submarine ihnisers ranging from tlfty to eighty live feet In length. ARMING NO EASY TASK. It Takea Time and Hard Work to Fit Merchant Ships For Defense. The arming of n ship for defeuse Is r.6 small task It Is not merely n mat it of sllngtiiK a gun Into place at the stern and bolting It to the deck. Decks are not strong enough to carry a gun of the type which Is uowaduys being mounted on merchantmen, Such a gun. If tired from the unsupported fouuda tlon of a ship's deck, would probably lie carried right through tho deck., bolts and all, by tho force of Its recoil and would do almost us much harm ! as a hostile torpedo. Therefore a com l rtex steel framework, riveted far down Into the frame of the ship, comprising many tons of stout structural steel, must be lltted Into place. Deck opace must be cleared, to give i lie gun a elenr sweep In all directions. Everything possible must be done to usslst efficiency and raptdlty of action, for here Is u matter where minutes d even se.-onds count heavily Then I ttwre must be provided 'piarters for ia kuii crew handy to the gun and . i.i'iitent space for the storage of amiii'Muiloii. BRITISH USING A NEW GUN. Germans Think It U Peumatlo Shell Does Great Damage. Tho German c-orrespondents on the woslprn front report that the British me using u new type of gun nnd nhell Tho gun appears to bo pneumatic, as It makes no noise when tired and can therefore bo used from poluta very close to the front The shell which It carries bursts with an explosion resembling that of, a mine, and. tho destructive area of tho burst is large. It ) chiefly used against deep dugouts and ticiieh is't!oi:s. Efficiency. A New Vork department store speeds up the loading of its delivery wagons hy running Its autos. Ipqlde of thp building and trauHjiorting them to vari ous floury qn large elevutprs, Rxpen slve and uiincccssary stock handling Is Mum prevented by loadlug tlie trucks dliiidly.
