The Portland Telegram sums up the lumber situation on the Pacific coast, and the attitude the public ought to assume toward the lumber industry, In the following edi torial: "In some counties of Oregon and Washington It has seemed right to the county officials, in order to meet the demands for more revenue for good roads and new schools and other needed improvements, to increase the assessed value of all timber lands. In Jackson county, Oregon, specially there was talk of actually doubling the assessed value of the previous year. "In that county, as in many others, the timbermen pay a large percentage of the taxes, and derive very little, if any, benefit from the expenditure of those taxes. There is nothing fair or logical in taking such action in a time like this. In truth, there is very little timber property that could be sold at even the same price It was bought for several years ago. "A prominent timberman of this city declares that he can buy now for a lower figure than he has paid during the last five or six years. When one adds carrying charges and considers the risk taken, and the fact that the money could have been made to earn something in some other place, Pacific Coast timber investments do not look very attractive at the present time. "Probably no lumberman one th Pacific Coast had a better and more successful reputation behind him than C. A. Smith of Coos Bay. His operations as they were carried on in Minneapolis would have been a great credit to anybody. He came to the Pacific Coast and went in on a broad-gauge, courageous way. He has been the largest lumber manufacturer and one of the largest timber owners we have ever had in Oregon. His organization has been excellent, and his entire equipment strictly up to date. He has lost money consistently every year, and now finds him self in the hands of a receiver with an indebtedness of something like ten millions. "His operations had been widely advertised, and no other failure could have done so much .harm to the credits of Pacific Coast lumbermen. The hard truth is now that Pacific Coast timber and lumber credits are not only very closely scrutinized, but are pretty badly thought of all over the country. Ninety per cent of the lumbermen on this Coast who have tried to operate during the past year have lost money, and nearly all of them are worse off than they were five years ago. "In the face of these facts, which are of common know ledge, no fair-minded assessor can think of raising values. The State of Oregon can much better afford to encourage large industries and large investors than to pursue a policy calculated to drive them away." EXTENT OF THE WAR. A striking idea of the extent of the, present war may be gained from the statement that more than half .the Inhabitants of the world are engaged in it. This applies to both land area and population. The area of the British Empire exceeds 13,000,000 square miles, that of France is over 4,000,000, and Russia's Is In excess of 8,000,pppK Belgium, Including her Congo possessions; Japan, Sorbin and Montenegro Increase the total .territory , of th 'Aftea to iWrly 27,000.000 yquuro miles'!' gainst this tremendous area' that of (ho tfbrman trio. does not bulk vory largo. Grmany, Austria and Turkey, nU told, havo but Uttlo more than 2,fiQ0,000, but the total area of, tho combatant nations foots up 29,500,110 square miles, while the grand total or tho land in both hemispheres is only GG,5GO,000 square miles. , The population ot the. Allied countries is 780,8:10,000, and that of their enomloa'.countries 102,020,000, a total. of 910,750,000, while the whole raco of man la estimated at only 1.023,000,000. And the chances are that more nations rather than fewer will shdrtly bo involved. What a commentary on twentieth-century civilization! The Truth. GOVERNMENT PLANS FOR SUGAR BEET WORK During tho present year tho United States dparlmont of agriculture will undertake field Btudles of sugar-beet production with tho object, primarily, of determining tho conditions under which sugar-beet production Is feasible and where possible to Increase the net returns for monoy and labor invested by beet growers. In order to accomplish this, the relation of tho sugar beet to other farm operations will be studied. In previous general survoys, the areas In which sugar beets may be profitably grown under present agricultural and economic conditions have been located. These Includo Gl of tho 77 areas where sugar beets havo been grown previously and one or more new areas. In those arcaB whore sugar beets have been previously grown and are no longer profitable, other lines of agriculture are being worked out. Insofar as the contributing fnctors for unprofitable sugar-beet production, such as diseases, Inferior cultural methods, and other factors. Interfering with sugar-beet pro duction have been determined, special demonstrations will be carried on to show how these difficulties may be over An unusually large number of news items have been brought to The News office tho past few days.
