Asian Heritage Issue Page 10 n THE ASIAN REPORTER May 1, 2017 Celebrating Asian Heritage The Asian Reporter celebrates Asian Heritage Month with this special expanded issue and with our May 15 issue covering The Asian Reporter Foundation’s 19th Annual Scholarship & Awards Banquet. In this edition, we mark heritage month with a look at Mele Murals, a docu- mentary about the transformative power of art through the unlikely union of graffiti and ancient Hawai‘ian culture. The film follows the stories of two renowned street artists, a group of Native Hawai‘ian youth, and the rural community of Waimea, and shows how public art and Native Hawai‘ian traditions affect the artists, students, and community. The issue also highlights Forever, Chinatown, a short film that tells the story of unknown, self- taught 81-year-old artist Frank Wong, who has spent the past four decades re-creating his fading memories by building romantic, extraordinarily detailed miniature models of the San Francisco China- town rooms of his youth. Finally, our expanded events calendar provides a monthlong guide to Asian art, history, culture, and entertainment, including the “Asian and Pacific Islander Day at the Capitol” celebration on May 20 in Salem, Oregon; activities scheduled at the Lan Su Chinese Garden in Portland and the Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River, Oregon during the month of May; and more.
