Asian NWSL players shone all over the pitch in 2015, excelling at every position except goalkeeper. No other Asian player had a greater impact than Nadia Nadim, the Afghani forward who started 18 of Sky Blue FC’s 20 games. Sky Blue finished tied for second-to-last in the league, with just 22 goals scored, but six of those 22 goals came from Nadim, who ended the season tied for seventh in the NWSL in both shots taken and shots on goal, categories in which she also led her team by a wide margin. Nadim came to Sky Blue in 2014 on loan from Danish club Fortuna Hjørring; she also plays for the Danish national team for her adoptive country. Nadim and her family fled from Afghanistan to Denmark after her father was killed by the Taliban, and soccer became one of Nadia’s passions.
