The Nadeshiko beat Cameroon 2-1. The win, coupled with Japan’s 1-0 victory over Switzerland, qualifies the defending champion for the knockout round of the Women’s World Cup (WWC) with one match still to play in the group stage of the tournament. The monthlong competition, which takes place every four years, kicked off on June 6 at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The championship match takes place Sunday, July 5 at BC Place. See story on page 8.
