New York governor Cuomo attends
NYPD officer Wenjian Liu’s wake
two days after his father’s death
Continued from page 8
The 32-year-old officer
had been on the police force
for seven years and had
gotten married two months
before he was killed.
Officer Liu was remem-
bered as an incarnation of
the American dream: a
man who had emigrated
from China at age 12 and
devoted himself to helping
others in his adopted
country.
Liu’s longtime aspiration
to become a police officer
deepened after the Septem-
ber 11 terrorist attacks, his
father, Wei Tang Liu, said
through tears at the
funeral.
And as he finished his
daily work, the only child
would call his father to say:
“I’m coming home today.
You can stop worrying
now,” his father recalled
during the service, which
blended police tradition
with
references
to
Buddha’s teachings.
Dignitaries
including
Federal Bureau of Inves-
tigation director James
Comey and members of
congress joined police
officers from around the
country in a throng of over
10,000 mourners.
Liu’s funeral arrange-
ments were delayed so
relatives from China could
travel to New York, where
he married Pei Xia Chen
this fall.
“He is my soul mate,” she
said. “My hero.”
Associated Press writers Jennifer
Peltz and Jonathan Lemire
contributed to this report.
How The Interview’s
VOD grosses could
change the game
“I think 2015 is going to
be the biggest box-office
year ever in theaters and
that’ll have a ripple effect
in VOD. The VOD space
benefits from movies doing
well in the theaters,” he
said.
But years down the line,
this case will not be
forgotten, especially if
Sony continues releasing
its digital numbers, in-
cluding The Interview’s
second-week performance.
While it’s unlikely that
we’ll ever get a day-and-
date release of a Marvel
blockbuster, a $25-million
comedy, drama, or rom-
com could now become fair
game, no matter how
uncomfortable it may be for
theater owners.
