The Oregon state game commission. Izaac Walton
league and Preserve the Rogue association are keeping
the Rogue river from being a successful fishing stream.
Shocking? On the contrary. The evidence shows
that with the construction of high dams on the main
stem of the Rogue river the fishing and recreation of
the basin would be improved.
Let s face it. The Rogue has been depleted through
the years to an insignificant fishing stream. It once
was of world-renown importance. It can be again if we
act on the basis of the evidence and put “Plan A” into
development.
The opposition to high dams on the Rogue has
centered around the value of the sports fishery to the
basin ($809,000 in proposed affected area) that would
be lost as a result of the dam. Knowing full-well of pro
jects in other areas in progress to alleviate alleged and
actual ill effects of high dams, the groups also estimat­
ed that a similar project for the Rogue would cost an
initial 2 million dollars and an annual maintenance of
$200,000-5300,000.
These figures were undoubtedly garnered to scare
out support of the dam. But, in these figures we have

been spent, and are being spent, on the Grand Coulee
fish maintenance project which originally supported a
fishery of only $250.000.
The facts and figures that have been related in
this newspaper for the past six weeks prove that cool
water from high dams when let out in controlled
amounts, along with maintenance projects, actually
INCREASES the value of the fishery and the sporting
business really BOOMS.
Further, with the increase in the amount of irri­
gated land, game cover for upland birds such as phea-

the effects that a well-stocked reservoir would have if

quantities that an observer said last October that
Shasta lake is “one of the best bass lakes in the coun­
try and within a few years will be producing prize
catches in Kamloop trout and Kokanee.”
Okay. If fishing can get no worse, and has every
chance of getting better, is the cost involved worth it ?
Well, the game commission and friends must
think so or they wouldn’t have raised such a fuss.
FINAL QUESTION: If the fishery is valuable
enough to at least maintain the status quo without
harm and with every reason to believe that it will be
bettered (it can’t get much worse!), why not spend
some money to maintain it, and, more important, get
the long-needed irrigation and flood control as well
as better fishing?
QUESTION TO END ALL QUESTIONS: And, if
the fishery is NOT valuable enough to at least main-

ure out how you reasoned that fishing was so import­
ant when 99 per cent of the valley was interested in
the other phases of the plan.

pressure you have been subjected to by the opposition,
e now state that your wish is answered and that you

All agencies, groups and organizations in this
area who are interested in its future snould reconsider
the situation in lieu of the evidence and press this mat­
ter with the department of interior until completion
We must constantly strive for a bigger and better
Rogue basin to insure the agricultural, industrial
domestic and sporting growth of this great section of
the West. With competition what it is, it’s a cinch no­
body else will do it for us - but, rather expend their
energies stealing it away from us
