This column is inclined to agree
w ith the gentlem an fro m the key­
stone state, fo r if there were ever
o ve rt evidence of schizophrenia, of
s p lit personalities, it is the attem pt
of congress in an election year to
rush to impose taxes and controls
"beyond the c a ll of d u ty ," of a t­
tem pting to play sm a rt politics and
at the same tim e become "sta te s­
men** and p a trio ts: of backing up
the w a r e ffo rt to the h ilt, and at
the same tim e p o litic a lly sap at the
leadership; of scores of "M onday
m o rn in g q u a rte rb a cks" demanding
the whole coaching sta ff resign; of
short tem pers and bellicose word-
battles.
F o r instance, it is indeed strange,
p a rtic u la rly in an election year,
th a t there would be any opposition
to enaction of an excess profits tax
to "ta k e the p ro fit out of w a r”
when, at the same tim e, the m em ­
bers are voting men into the fro n t
lin e trenches. Y et th a t's the p a ra ­
dox, even when profits have been
e x tra o rd in a rily high this year even
fo r peace tim e profits. The P resi­
dent, even was w illin g to accept an
in te rim revenue b ill w ithout the ex­
cess profits tax provision, if he could
get i t in a h u rry . But he d id n 't
get i t in a h u rry . I t was almost two
and a h a lf months before he got
anything he asked fo r the w ar ef­
fo rt, except the d ra ft law —d ra ft of
men. that is.

Horse flies are troublesome pests
during the hot months and d iffic u lt
to k ill. Extension entomologists sug­
gest the use of pyrenone as an ef­
fective control of horse flies.
Pyrenone,
although
expensive,
w ill control horse flies on cattle for
about one week. One p a rt of p yre­
none to nine parts of w ater is recom ­
mended. About two pints to each
cow is net ed. This should rid the
cow of the bothersome pest.
