Throughout the sum m er of 1949 instances of fields fish dying in ponds near cotton that had been b e r V e D a i n t y dusted w ith the new organic cot- ton insect poisons were reported to both the Alabama departm ent of conservation and the a g ricu ltu r- al experim ent station The two org- ante poisons reported to have caused the death of fish were toxa- phene and the BHC-DDT m ixture. One report of toxaphene k illin g fish was fro m the K ilb y prison fa rm near Montgomery. On this fa rm there was a sm all fish pond located in a pecan grove that was planted in cotton. When the boll weevil infection became heavy during the early summ er, this cot- ton fie ld was dusted w ith 20 per cent toxaphene by airplane. j Since the cotton was protected by the pecan trees, it was linpos- sible to get good dust coverage w ith an airplane.
