T h u rsd a y, O ctober 6, 1949 Church I Announcements A sh la n d , Oregon S outhern O regon News R eview News in Review at Hilt By Phyllis Alphonse ▼ F IR S T C H U R C H O F C H R IS T E a rl F. D ow ning, M in iste r. Second and B Streets BIBLE CO M M ENT FOR OCT. • 'Book of Isaiah' Was Compilation O f Many Authors J/MPHASIS 1« nt present on th J prophecies of Isnlnh and Jere miah, und It Is a coincidence ns these words are written that th«’ dally papers have announced the discovery of u manuscript, or scroll, copy of the prophecy of Isaiah of a much earlier date than any hllh«-rto known. The discovery of this manuscript In Itself however, emphasizes a fact well known to Biblical schol ars, both Jewish and Christian, not always taken Into account by gen eral readers. This manuscript, though much earlier than those formerly known. Is some centuries later than the time when Isaiah lived. If the “Book of Isaiah" meant that we have a book by Isaiah, d i rectly from his own hand, like a book from some modern nuthor, some problems in connection with the long prophetic book would be easily solved. But the prophecy by Isnlnh represents n compilation nt a Inter date in which other prophecies, and some of n period much later than the time of Isaiah, were Included. A few basic facts, always pres ent in the mind, attitude, and outlook of all the Hebrew p re .h it must be constantly borne In m in i by those who would have even a meager understanding of what they said and wrote. The first of these facts was their strong nnd basic belief in God's call to Israel ns a chosen people This choice was not inevitable, or non-forfeitable It was established in a covenant, and a covenant Is a two-party agreement The other basic fact was of Israel's situation in the midst of the great pagan empire of the an cient world. Egypt was always to the south and some great pagan power to the north, east and west The fear of invasion was great, the danger of entangling alliances with one or other of their powerful neighbors always a possibility, and with it all the deeper danger oi corrupting forces de troying th moral and religious integrity o Israel.
