R ogue River Basin The hearing held Tuesday on the Rogue River Basin Reclamation project proved one thing decisively. That one point which was brought out was that the big time sportsmen are perfectly willing to spend money to keep the fishing as they like it, letting the future of the country go to blazes. No region has ever gotten rich off sport fishing. Economists point out that the tourist dollar, which supposedly would be brought in here by the fishing., is a very nebulous thing and that it isn’t actual wealth. The tourist dollar rolls in here and then when our Rogue River folks go on vacation it rolls back to where u came from, creating, producing nothing. As a way of contrast to determine just how much value recrea tion is to a community just look at the property values per acre in an area supported by resorts a.d seasonal fishing w.th the property values of a rich irrigated farm section. There is no comparison. The Northwest, including the valley of the Rogue is facing one of the greatest boom areas this nation has seen. People and industries are moving westward and are seeking homes and work, land and farm products in this very area. By planning for a rich future, by setting up additional irrigation projects, by creating adequate sources of power for industry tin s country can become wealthy. Wealth isn’t found on the end of a sal mon rod. Fish produced $809,000 last year, the farms produced $ a j,000,000. l and that produces, factories that produce, and people with din ner pails are more important to the future growth of this region th a n all the salmon that ever swam up ihe Rogue. Classified Advertisements - Read ’em arid Heap - Hooper’s Radiator ¡Service A point which should be brought out concerning the proposed plans for setting up reclamation projects in the valley of the Rogue is that the fishing will not be spoiled, ruined, or lost because of the dams. There will be more fishing available for more people to enjoy. The style of fishing may change a bit, but the addition of dams and reservoirs to the Rogue River will make more boating and f i s h i n g available to more people, at less cost, than now enjoy the river. The people who claim that the recreational advantages of the river will be lost are being very short sighted. As a matter of fact the recreational advantages of the river will be increased and more tourists will find recreational advantages in this region than ever before. G enuine A rt-C arved diam on d rings a r e As per usual, whenever men begin tinkering with time there are same people who find it to their satisfaction not to conform, and so they bumble and struggle and come up with all kinds of excuses as to why they can’t go on the same time as the rest of the people. This situation confronts the entire nation today. Every city is going on its own time, some are saving daylight, and some are giving it away. It’s too bad that the country can’t go on daylight saving time all at once, by federal decree, and avoid all this nonsense. Some day that will be the situation. Each year more and more communities go on daylight saving time, making those that don’t look Sillier and sillier as they become fewer and fewer. We think Ashland is to be commended for having taken such a forward step this year. Too bad it couldn’t have been taken a month ago before the weeds got such a start in our garden. Already the little roadside stands are springing up outside the cities to sell firecrackers. Seems to us as though the answer to the firecracker problem is not being met in that fashion. It’s penalizing the local merchant rather than the firecracker bug. The city ordinance prevents both the sale and the use of firecrackers in the city. The fact that it prevents the use of firecrackers should be enough. Under tlie present se up reputable business men and women can’t sell to the firecracker trade, yet any Tom, Dick or Harry can set up a stand at the city outskirts, adding to the existing confusion on the roads and competing with established businesses which pay city taxes. K -3 . .LX. < ê k it ★ * The Fire E n gin e We all like to watch the fire engine go by. Iti an exciting sight, with the siren screaming and the firemen hanging on for dear life and the dogs and the children tearing down the street after it. But the sight at the end of its run may not be so stimulating. It may be a grass fire, easily put out with extinguishers. It may he some deserted shack which should have been torn down long ago. It may be minor damage to a building. But, on the other hand, it may be a fire that puts the biggest em ploying concern in town out of business for months--or a fire that destroys a house that represents the savings and labor o f years--or a fire that burns somebody to death. Whatever kind of fire it is, great or small, costly or unimportant it makes its contribution to our disgraceful record of fire waste. May be the damage -to a building only runs into a few hundred dollars--.! sum so small as to hardly worth talking about. That was the little fire you saw.
