Southern Oregon News Review, Ashland, Ore, Thursday, May so, 1948 Methodist Church Conference May 24 ---------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------ trivi and many others. Our rock SOUTHERN OKEGON NEWS REVIEW Published every Thursday by THE SISKIYOU RUBBISHING COMPANY Ashland, Oregon 3V East Main Street Carry 1 H. Wines and Wendell D. Lawrence, Publishers WENDELL LAWRENCE. Editor Entered as second-class mail matter in the post office at Ash land, Oregon, February 15, 1935, under the act of Congress ot March 3, 1879. Mayorality Our congratulations go to Tom Williams lor throwing his hat in the ring concerning the mayorality race. There’ll be other hats in the ring soon, and we’re glad of it. The more men who indicate an interest in city politics the better for die city. Democracy begins at home. This year, of all years, it is important that the American people demonstrate hteir belief in the democratic tradition. The eyes of the world, many of them hostile, are upon us, and those who would overthrow the democratic system are studying the small town democratic practices, for it is in the villages and the byways that democracy is best practiced, and it follows that it is in the same spots that the Communistic foes of democracy are going to make their opening wedges. The more people like Mr. Williams, who get out and run for public- office, who are willing to shoulder responsibility, the less chance the followers of the Commie line will have to infiltrate into America. This community owes all of it’s public servants a debt of gratitude for their willingness to put aside their^own affairs for the sake of their townspeople, and this community will owe all candidates for public o f fice a vote of thanks, for their willingness to mix into city politics, win, lose, or draw. ★ ★ * Private Airplanes I he fact that private airplanes are still an expense beyond the means of the average man was cited this week in an article written by the engineering experiment station at Oregon State college entitled "Econ omics of Personal Airplane Operation.” The effect of the cost is shown by the fact that one third of the airplane owners keep their planes only one year and more than 50% of these give financial difficulty as the reason tor disposing of their planes. The hourly cost of operation for an average light plane runs at $7.34 or 9c per mile. This includes insurance, depreciation, and interest on investment. Studies indicate, however, that the plane can be compared favorably with the automobile for trips between 200 and 500 miles and with rail and airlines for joo to 800 mile trips. Trips with mileage other than these are best taken care of by other means of transportation than the light plane. One of the greatest uses of the light plane, however, has been proven to be the Sunday sporting angle, however, its an expensive sport. But fine if you can afford it. Notwithstanding the facts and figures shown in the bulletin we feel that is is important that this city have an airport, for those who do have planes, and for the use of those who someday will be using planes. County Federal Savings and Loan which was instituted In Ashland this week is a welcome addition to the community. W e’re glad to see Judge Nelle Burns take on the responsibility of operating the Ashland office of the Loah association. Many Ashland people have for several years utilized the services of the institution, and one, Ralph Billings is represented on the board of directors. H av ing an office in Ashland will do a great deal toward helping fulfill the needs of the community.
