Oregon Only One Tree Left Nowhere in the United States—or the whole world, for that matter— can be found a second Hau Kuahiwi (Mountain Hau) tree. One is grow ing near the eastern edge of Hawaii National park on the island of Ha waii. Unless scientists can find a mate for the tree, its death will mark the end of the species. Fermate for Pears Pear growers of Hood River val ley in Oregon increased their aver age production of marketable Anjou pears from 200 to 300 boxes per acre and their total returns about $800,- 000 in 1946 by switching from wet- table sufur spray to fermate. Ear lier experiments had shown fer mate to be more effective for pear scab control and less injurious to foliage. What Five Cents Does What motors can do for less than five cents worth of electricity is amazing. For that amount, they can, among other chores, operate equipment which shells 20 to 30 bushels of corn, milk 10 to 20 cows, do the biggest family washing, pump 1,000 gallons of water, run a sewing machine for 30 hours and m ix 2 tons of feed. Carrying the Rod When walking through a patch of woods, carry the rod with the butt forward. This is particularly neces- sary with a fly rod. Many a rod tip has been wrecked in being carried through a thicket without being properly protected. Ancient Indian Race Bones and implements of a race of-Californla Indians who lived 15,000 to 20,000 years ago In Topango can yon, near Santa Monica, have been unearthed by University of Califor nia anthropologists. Building on Sand Loose sand can be packed solid enough to support heavy building foundations with a unique device known as a •’vibroflotation” ma chine that combines powerful vibra tions of jets of water to pack the loose particles.
