Submarine Development Simon Lake invented the even keel submersible submarine. The “Argonaut,” built in 1897, was the first craft of its kind to navigate the open sea successfully, the first to salvage sunken treasures. He also invented submarine apparatus for locating and recovering sunken ves sels and their cargoes, and a heavy- oil internal combustion engine for marine use. Greatest Fan Game Basketball. America’s only origi nal major sport, attracts more paid admissions than any other sport. The game was originated by Dr. James A. Naismith while he was physical director of the Y.M.C.A. In Springfield, Mass., in 1891, but the first real game was not played until January 20, 1892, which day is con sidered the birthday of basketball. Dr. Naismith later became a pro fessor at University of Kansas. Introduction of Microscope From the time of discovery of lenses in the 13th century until the introduction of the microscope to wards the close of the 17th century, lenses were used exclusively for eyeglasses and hand reading glass es. The lenses were made of rela tively soft glass and were ground and polished by hand.
