COLLEGE SHOWN TO
BE COMMUNITY’S
BIGGEST BUSINESS
(Continued from front page)
bers about the Pear Bowl, Dr.
Stevenson expressed a regret that
Ashland had failed to support the
college football team to a degree
necessary to m ake it a paying
enterprise. He further estim ated
th at it would require an average
of $3000 per game for the athletic
program to be a profitable e n te r
prise. This amount, he said, was
necessary in th at football carried
the entire year's athletic expenses
Basketball and other sports had ;
proven to be strictly liabilities.
Last years average income In
home games was slightly over
$2000 per game and ultim ately not
enough to handle the years o u t- !
lay of $37,000 for equipm ent and
operating expenses.
Dr Stevenson explained though,
that it was not entirely for fin
ancial reasons that Southern O re
gon College would play only a
few home games this year. He
stated that the college belongs
to Southern Oregon and th at an
effort to distribute games among
the towns of southern Oregon
was made to extend and broaden
interest in the school. This m eth
od he explained, was one of the
school’s best advertisem ents.
