Continuous Yield If you re interested in forest lands, timber, and the future of the lumber industry you'll tind Lyle F. 'X att’s annual report full ot mean mg. Chief Forester 'X att’s made his report to Clinton 1’. Anderson, secretary ot agriculture, but it is available at the offices of the United States Forest service in Ashland, it you're at all interested in perusing it Watts points out that the tree-farm movement which started in the Pacific Northwest is spreading and that leaders in the forest industries realize that timber supplies tor the future must be grown. "All forest lands must be kept productive in order to insure future users a continuous supply ot timber," Watts stated. 1 his can be done only by cooperation between the timber owners, the logging interests, and the National Forest officials. In Oregon, where the second largest industry is lumbering, and parti cularly in Ashland, where a mayor share ot the town's payroll conies from the logging industry it is ot the utmost importance that a con tinuous yield be obtained from the producing lumber areas which sur round the community. Any individual who is interested in the matter can obtain a copy of the report from the Department of Agriculture, >X ashmgton, D. C. or can read the report in the office of Harold Thomas, forest ranger for the Ashland District. * * * A College Town Is Ashland a college town?— Could be. They could give even a fairly accurate description of the town of which it is a part. They shop in its stores, attend its theaters and bowl in its bowling alley but they let it be known most emphatically that the stores, restaurants and theaters of Klamath Falls, Grants Pass, or Med ford are much superior to these which necessity forces them to frequent The greater share of the students are transients, detained somewhat re luctantly in Ashland. They make little effort to become a part of the town in which they live. Many residents of Ashland are interested in the college and its wel fare and are able to help students in many ways but they can do so only if the students want that help. Southern Oregon expects the townspcopl« to back their teams .attend their plays and applaud any successes which individuals may attain, but what do many students give in return? Naturally to most students, the hometown is the best place in the world; but could there not be a »second best place? If Ashland did make a determined attempt to make Ashland a shop ping center for Southern Oregon’s collegians, we’re sure that the colle gians would soon feel that the best clothes, the best restaurants, and the best places of recreation were to be found in Ashland. Seems that for weeks he’s been frying to get his young- •tors to scrub out the bathtub after usbg It. And this night lie sees two rings around it—one where young Sonny left off, and another shoot Pinky’s level. Re rave« and rants—and takes it out on tho missus for her lack of discipline. And later that eve ning he sees her quietly polishing tho hardwood table that’s right by his chair. She’s removing the rings he’s left there with his eve ning glass of beer! Front now on, Jeb’s careful to put his glass down on the table cover—like the missus does. And I hear he’s a little more forgiving about rings around the bathtub. Just keeps on patiently reminding. From where I sit, there are little annoyances in every family —con flicting habits and opinions in every community. A little patience a little more "forgive and let live” la the only antidote.
