In 18 Western Oregon counties
during th<- fiscs! year ending June
30. 1943, not only supplied 415 mil
lion board feet of lumber for war
and industrial purposes, but also
resulted In payments of nearly
(1,000,000 In cash to the general
fund of the counties In which the
land is situated.
Mr, E. K Peterson, Acting Dis
trict Forester in charge of the
Southern Oregon area, states tha^
Jackson County, with an aggre
gate credit of $100,052.53, ranked
second among the recipients of O
A C. funds. Douglas County was
first with $253,709 88; Lane Coun
ty third and Josephine County
fourth.
The gross receipts of the O. *
C. Administration are pooled, and
then 50 per cent is divided among
the counties according to the pro-
portion of the total valuation of
O Ik C. lands that existed in each
county in 1910 the year the lands
revested to the Department of the
Interior from the Oregon and Cal
ifornia i (now Southern Pacific)
Railroad For the past five years
the O. * C. has been making an
additional payment of 25 per cent
for back taxes accrued prior to
1937
The 1943 payments have
liquidated this obligation. Hence
forth, 25 per cent will accrue to
the Federal Treasury. The re
maining 25 per cent is available
for administration of the O. & C
lands, including protection from
fire which is contracted to the
State of Oregon Forestry Depart-I
merit.
Forming one of the nation's
largest testing grounds for scien
tific forest management, timber
cutting as required by congres
sional mandate, is conducted on a \
sustained yield basis which stip
ulates that no more timber shall
be cut each year than can be
replaced by natural growth. Cut
ting is conducted in such a man
ner that recreational values are
protected, timber growth is accel-
i erated, and natural reforestation
is obtained.
